Job Title: Manufacturing Engineer
Job Description
This Manufacturing Engineer role supports a growing engineering department that is evolving into a hybrid team responsible for both manufacturing methods/operations and design. You will develop detailed operation sheets, create assembly instructions, and support tooling design for complex military mechanical and structural components. The position focuses on interpreting customer specifications, defining robust methods of manufacturing, and ensuring accurate, compliant documentation flows to the shop floor for production in a highly regulated aerospace and defense environment.
Responsibilities
Review customer specifications and technical data packages to define appropriate manufacturing methods for military mechanical and structural components.
Create clear, detailed operation sheets and assembly instructions that guide shop floor personnel through each step of the manufacturing process.
Develop and refine manufacturing methods for mechanical parts, ensuring compliance with aerospace and defense standards and customer requirements.
Support tooling design by identifying tooling needs, contributing to tooling concepts, and collaborating with internal teams to ensure tools meet production requirements.
Interface closely with quality teams to address nonconformances, request and process Requests for Variance (RFVs), and ensure alignment with AS9100 and ISO 9001 quality standards.
Communicate with government and customer technical representatives to obtain clarifications, resolve technical issues, and ensure accurate interpretation of requirements.
Collaborate directly with touch labor teams during first article and initial production runs to validate methods, troubleshoot issues, and refine process documentation.
Ensure all manufacturing documentation, including operation sheets, assembly instructions, and related process records, is complete, accurate, and properly released to the shop floor.
Utilize an ERP system to support contract takeoff for parts, establish routings, and maintain accurate manufacturing and process data.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives in manufacturing processes, focusing on efficiency, quality, and repeatability.
Support adherence to AS9100 and ISO 9001 requirements by incorporating best practices and documented procedures into methods and operations.
Work closely with cross-functional teams in engineering, operations, and quality to ensure on-time delivery, consistent quality, and best value performance for customers.
Essential Skills
Minimum 3+ years of manufacturing engineering experience (3 years may be considered for highly qualified candidates).
Strong understanding of manufacturing processes for mechanical components and assemblies, particularly in a production environment.
Demonstrated ability to create detailed operation sheets, including process steps, tooling, and inspection requirements, as the most critical skill for this role.
Experience developing assembly instructions for mechanical and structural assemblies.
Hands-on experience with manufacturing methodizing for mechanical parts, including defining routings, processes, and work instructions.
Proficiency with ERP systems to support contract takeoff for parts and to manage manufacturing data and routings.
Experience in process improvement and continuous improvement within a manufacturing setting.
Familiarity with AS9100 and ISO 9001 quality management systems and their application in production environments.
Background in aerospace or defense manufacturing strongly preferred, with the ability to work to detailed specifications and stringent regulatory requirements.
Strong communication skills to effectively interface with quality teams, government technical representatives, and internal stakeholders.
Ability to collaborate closely with shop floor personnel and support first production runs to validate methods and documentation.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Tooling design experience or significant exposure to tooling concepts is a plus.
Experience working with military mechanical and structural components and assemblies.
Exposure to aerospace and defense programs, including work with detailed customer specifications and technical data packages.
Demonstrated involvement in continuous improvement initiatives, such as optimizing processes for cost, quality, and delivery.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment, partnering with engineering, operations, and quality teams.
Strong attention to detail and documentation discipline to ensure accurate, complete, and compliant manufacturing records.
