Job Title: Facilities Engineer
Job Description
The Facilities Engineer will lead the development and management of requirements for new, government-aligned industrial facilities that support multi-year defense and aerospace programs. This role focuses on defining the technical and operational needs of future facilities, ensuring compliance with government standards, and driving those requirements through design, planning, and eventual construction. The engineer will translate conceptual facility needs into executable construction plans, positioning the organization for a seamless build once construction begins in approximately two years. The position requires deep facilities engineering expertise in government or controlled-environment @contexts and offers the opportunity to influence facility performance, operational efficiency, and mission success across multiple Department of Defense projects.
Responsibilities
Lead the development, definition, and management of design and operational requirements for new government-aligned facilities from early concept through construction.
Drive improvements in facility operations, maintenance programs, and real property management to enhance performance and reliability.
Provide technical recommendations to optimize manufacturing operations, reduce costs, and improve overall operational efficiency.
Prepare, review, and deliver engineering reports, technical assessments, and formal presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
Oversee contractor-executed activities, including planning and design, facility development, maintenance, and property transition efforts.
Evaluate contractor performance against cost, schedule, quality, and compliance requirements, and recommend corrective actions when needed.
Apply project management principles to facility-related projects, including estimating, scheduling, and progress tracking.
Conduct facility inspections, engineering analyses, and operational studies to identify issues, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local real property policies, regulations, and standards throughout the project lifecycle.
Identify operational and project risks and provide structured recommendations for mitigation and corrective actions.
Coordinate closely with client teams, general contractors, architects, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders to align expectations and deliverables.
Participate in design review and construction oversight activities to confirm that facility designs and installations meet defined requirements.
Support construction management efforts on new industrial facility projects at Department of Defense installations, typically spanning 2-3 years in duration.
Contribute to program management, program coordination, and stakeholder management activities to keep projects on track and aligned with mission objectives.
Essential Skills
At least 7 years of experience as a Facilities Engineer, Mechanical Designer, or Mechanical Engineer within a Government-Owned, Contractor-Operated (GOCO) or U.S. Government (USG) facility.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, with preference for licensure in Michigan (MI) or Ohio (OH).
Proven experience working on government, industrial, or manufacturing facility projects from concept through design and construction.
Demonstrated experience performing design calculations and engineering work with mechanical building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, piping, and controls and automation.
Proven capability in developing, defining, and managing design requirements for new facilities, including greenfield projects built from scratch, and managing those requirements through construction.
Experience in engineering consulting or other client-facing technical roles, including collaboration with general contractors, architects, owners, and subcontractors.
Experience evaluating contractor performance against cost, schedule, quality, and compliance requirements.
Strong understanding of real property regulations, easements, permitting, and land-use agreements.
Experience with program management, project management, and program coordination in a facilities or construction @context.
Hands-on experience with contractor oversight, subcontractor management, design review, construction, and stakeholder management.
Technical familiarity with mechanical and electrical aspects of building systems relevant to industrial and manufacturing facilities.
Eligibility to work on U.S. government-related projects that require U.S. citizenship.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license is strongly preferred and considered a key differentiator.
Mechanical design experience for buildings, particularly in industrial or manufacturing environments.
Experience as a Mechanical Engineer or Mechanical Designer within an architecture and engineering (A+E) firm.
Experience with construction management, including estimating, scheduling, and quality control for facility projects.
Knowledge of government contracting environments and government contract requirements.
Experience supporting or leading multiple Department of Defense facility projects with 2-3 year durations.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, client-focused consulting environment.
Motivation to work with leading defense and aerospace clients and to have a direct impact on facility performance and operational efficiency.
Work Environment
This role supports multiple Department of Defense industrial facility construction projects, each typically spanning 2-3 years. The position is open to remote candidates. For local candidates, the role generally involves approximately 75% office work and 25% travel to client job sites across the United States. Travel may be short-term or long-term, so flexibility is important. When traveling, a per diem at the applicable General Services Administration (GSA) rate covers lodging and meals/incidentals. The average workweek is about 45 hours, with the potential to increase up to 60 hours during peak project periods. Standard hours are approximately 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with some flexibility based on project needs. The Facilities Engineer will work closely with project management and other facilities engineering professionals in a collaborative, consulting-oriented environment focused on defense and aerospace clients, leveraging modern engineering tools and processes to support design, construction, and operational optimization of complex facilities.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $57.00 - $67.31/hr.
