The Construction Material Technician performs field testing, observation, and inspection of construction materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel on large, high-profile projects. This role supports quality control and quality assurance efforts by accurately collecting, documenting, and reporting test data, while maintaining a strong focus on safety and collaboration. The position involves consistent full-time hours with some in-state travel across Arkansas, particularly in Northwest Arkansas.
Responsibilities
Conduct field tests, observations, and inspections of construction materials, including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel to support quality control and quality assurance on active projects.
Perform construction materials testing such as concrete testing, concrete inspection, soil testing, soil sampling, compaction testing, and Proctor testing in accordance with applicable standards and procedures.
Operate and properly use testing equipment, including nuclear density gauges and other field and laboratory instruments, following established safety and operating protocols.
Communicate effectively with project managers, engineering technicians, client representatives, contractor representatives, and other project stakeholders regarding construction site activities, project requirements, and testing, observation, and inspection results.
Transport material samples, along with all required documentation, to the laboratory for further testing and analysis in a timely and organized manner.
Compile, prepare, and submit clear, accurate written and digital reports of daily test data and observations for transmittal to the project manager.
Maintain, clean, and organize equipment, vehicles, and work areas to support a safe, efficient, and professional working environment.
Assist with scheduling and dispatching technicians to project sites as needed to meet project timelines and staffing requirements.
Follow and enforce strict safety standards and protocols at all times, including safe operation of vehicles, tools, and testing equipment.
Support quality control and quality assurance processes by identifying and reporting nonconforming conditions and assisting in corrective actions when necessary.
Essential Skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with project managers, technicians, client representatives, and contractor personnel.
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a field and laboratory team on active construction sites.
High level of attention to detail with the ability to accurately document and report test results, observations, and site conditions.
Ability to maintain, operate, and troubleshoot construction materials testing equipment and vehicles.
Commitment to safety and strict adherence to safety protocols and procedures in the field and in the laboratory.
Experience or demonstrated aptitude in construction materials testing, including concrete testing, concrete inspection, soil testing, compaction testing, and Proctor testing.
Familiarity with quality control and quality assurance practices in construction materials testing.
Valid driver's license with an acceptable violation history.
High school diploma.
Ability to obtain ACI certification within 90 days of hire.
Ability to successfully complete required internal safety certifications.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with construction materials testing on active construction projects, including work with concrete, asphalt, soils, and aggregates.
Exposure to or experience with ACI-related testing and handling of concrete cylinders.
Familiarity with NICET-related concepts or credentials in construction materials testing or inspection.
Experience using nuclear gauges or nuclear density gauges for soil and asphalt compaction testing.
Background in inspection, quality control, and quality assurance for construction projects.
Previous field experience in construction, materials testing, or a related technical discipline.
Ability to work extended hours, including 40-60 hours per week, as project demands require.
Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tests, samples, and reports each day.
Willingness to travel within the state of Arkansas, particularly to sites in Northwest Arkansas.
Work Environment
This position is primarily field-based, with work performed on large, high-profile construction sites across Northwest Arkansas and other locations within Arkansas. Technicians work around heavy equipment, active construction operations, and varying site conditions, including outdoor environments and changing weather. The role typically requires 40-60 hours per week, with schedules driven by project needs. Work involves regular use of construction materials testing equipment such as concrete testing tools, soil sampling tools, compaction testing equipment, nuclear density gauges, and other field and laboratory instruments. Technicians also operate company vehicles to travel to and from project sites and to transport material samples to the laboratory. The work environment emphasizes safety, professionalism, and teamwork, with established safety protocols and internal safety training to support a safe and efficient workplace.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $27.00/hr.
