Job Title: Engineering Technician (Construction Materials)
Job Description
This role focuses on construction materials testing and inspection on a variety of building and infrastructure projects in the Wapakoneta area. The Engineering Technician performs field tests and inspections on materials such as concrete, soil, aggregates, masonry, asphalt, and reinforcing steel to verify compliance with project specifications and building codes. This is a hands-on, field-based position that offers comprehensive training, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals with construction or manual labor experience who want to develop specialized skills with a growing engineering firm.
Responsibilities
Perform field testing and inspection of construction materials, including concrete, soils, masonry, asphalt, aggregates, and reinforcing steel to ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable codes.
Review project drawings and specifications to understand testing requirements, acceptance criteria, and inspection procedures before and during field activities.
Accurately document and report test results, observations, and daily activities in a timely manner using standard forms and basic computer software.
Submit test reports and timesheets promptly to the Project Manager and communicate any nonconforming results or site issues as they arise.
Use and maintain testing equipment such as concrete testing tools and nuclear density gauges in accordance with safety and quality standards.
Follow established quality control and quality assurance procedures while performing all testing and inspection tasks.
Communicate clearly with project managers, contractors, and other field personnel to coordinate testing schedules and resolve basic site questions.
Apply basic computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word, to complete reports, track time, and manage daily documentation.
Work safely and effectively on active construction sites, adhering to all site safety rules and company safety policies.
Participate in provided training to develop proficiency in construction materials testing methods and to prepare for relevant industry certifications.
Support projects at other locations as needed, especially during slower periods, to maintain consistent workload and project coverage.
Work overtime and weekends when required to meet project schedules and support time-sensitive construction activities.
Essential Skills
High school diploma or equivalent.
Prior construction or manual labor experience such as concrete work, general construction labor, landscaping, or similar physically demanding roles.
Ability and willingness to work 100% outdoors on active construction sites in a wide range of weather conditions.
Willingness to work overtime and weekends as project schedules require.
Valid driver's license and ability to meet driving requirements for operating a company vehicle.
Ability to pass required drug screening, experience check, and motor vehicle record (MVR) driving record check.
Good written and verbal communication skills for documenting test results and interacting with project personnel.
Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
Physical ability to perform manual tasks associated with construction materials testing, including lifting, carrying equipment, and standing for extended periods.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in construction materials testing, concrete testing, or related quality control activities is preferred but not required.
Familiarity with or willingness to learn the use of nuclear density gauges for soil and asphalt compaction testing.
Industry certifications such as NICET, ACI Field, ODOT, NETTCP, and/or ICC are preferred; the company supports training to obtain these credentials.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate measurements and thorough documentation.
Ability to read and interpret basic construction drawings and specifications.
Motivation to learn new technical skills and grow within a fast-growing, employee-owned engineering firm.
Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic suited to field-based construction environments.
Work Environment
This position is 100% field-based on active construction sites in and around the Wapakoneta area. Most projects are local, and the typical day begins at the office, where you pick up a company vehicle and testing equipment before traveling to job sites. At the end of the day, you return to the office with the vehicle and equipment. Work takes place entirely outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind, and involves navigating uneven terrain and active work zones. The role may require overtime and weekend hours to align with construction schedules. The company operates as an employee-owned firm, offering the opportunity to earn ownership after a period of employment as a direct hire. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
