Job Title: Controls Engineer
Job Description
The Controls Engineer will support the design, installation, startup, and commissioning of automated conveyor systems integrated with Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) within a high-volume General Assembly manufacturing environment. The role focuses on material flow automation, including conveyors, FANUC robotic interfaces, and PLC-based control systems, to ensure reliable, safe, and optimized operation of production processes.
Responsibilities
Support the installation, commissioning, and validation of conveyor systems interfaced with ASRS solutions in the General Assembly environment.
Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs (Studio 5000 / Logix) that support material handling and storage automation.
Integrate and support FANUC robot interfaces connected to conveyor and ASRS systems for material transfer, pallet handling, and sequencing.
Participate in system startup, debug, and buyoff activities in collaboration with internal teams and external system integrators.
Diagnose and resolve controls, electrical, robotic, and communication issues affecting conveyor and ASRS performance.
Ensure compliance with established controls standards, safety standards, and plant floor requirements.
Collaborate closely with mechanical engineers, electricians, IT and networking teams, and operations personnel to ensure seamless system integration.
Support change management, system upgrades, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance automation reliability and throughput.
Assist with the creation and maintenance of documentation, including electrical schematics, I/O lists, control narratives, and commissioning checklists.
Provide on-site support during launches, production issues, and scheduled downtime as required.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent experience.
At least 3 years of controls engineering experience in an industrial or automotive manufacturing environment.
Hands-on experience with PLCs, including Studio 5000 / Logix platforms such as ControlLogix or CompactLogix.
Proven experience supporting or integrating conveyor systems and material handling automation.
Familiarity with ASRS or warehouse automation systems in a manufacturing setting.
Experience interfacing automation systems with FANUC robots.
Strong troubleshooting skills across PLC logic, field devices, sensors, drives, and industrial networks.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, layouts, and controls documentation.
Willingness to support on-site startup, commissioning, and off-shift support as needed.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in high-volume manufacturing environments, particularly general assembly operations.
Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams including mechanical, electrical, and IT disciplines.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a focus on root cause analysis and long-term corrective actions.
Effective communication skills to document technical work and coordinate with internal and external stakeholders.
Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in automated manufacturing systems.
Work Environment
The Controls Engineer works primarily in a high-volume automotive-style manufacturing and general assembly environment that relies on automated conveyor systems and ASRS for material handling. The role involves frequent interaction with PLCs (Studio 5000 / Logix), conveyor controls, FANUC robots, and related field devices, sensors, drives, and industrial networks. The position requires regular presence on the plant floor during equipment installation, startup, commissioning, and production, including support during launches, production issues, and scheduled downtime. Work hours may include off-shift or weekend support when necessary to meet production and project schedules. Appropriate industrial attire and adherence to plant safety and personal protective equipment requirements are expected while working in the facility
