The Electrical Systems Designer operates at a lead level, taking ownership of electrical system layout, supporting commissioning activities, and guiding less-experienced engineers to ensure projects progress smoothly and meet performance, safety, and reliability standards.
Responsibilities
Design electrical systems for industrial laundry equipment with a strong focus on material handling systems and industrial automation.
Translate defined equipment and system specifications into detailed electrical and control system layouts, including inputs, outputs, PLCs, and overall controls architecture.
Develop electrical designs using AutoCAD Electrical, EPlan, or similar 3D electrical design and modeling platforms.
Create and maintain electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and related documentation for manufacturing and installation.
Collaborate closely with software, mechanical, and electrical engineering team members to integrate control systems with mechanical designs and automation requirements.
Assist in commissioning new automation systems at customer sites, including system start-up, testing, troubleshooting, and optimization.
Travel approximately 4-6 times per year for commissioning assignments, typically ranging from 1 to 3 weeks per trip.
Support programming, configuration, and integration of PLC control, VFDs, HMIs, and related industrial automation components.
Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, safety requirements, and best practices for industrial electrical systems.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior or less-experienced engineers, helping to keep projects on schedule and aligned with design objectives.
Work closely with cross-functional teams across different business units to support global projects and share best practices in industrial controls and automation.
Contribute to continuous improvement of design methods, tools, and processes to enhance quality, reliability, and manufacturability of electrical systems.
Essential Skills
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
7+ years of experience in electrical system design, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
Strong experience in industrial controls and industrial automation systems.
Proficiency in electrical system design for industrial equipment, including material handling systems.
Hands-on experience with AutoCAD Electrical, EPlan, or other comparable electrical design and 3D modeling platforms.
Practical experience with PLC control systems, including defining inputs and outputs and developing controls architecture and integration strategies.
Experience with VFDs (variable frequency drives) and HMIs within industrial control systems.
Ability to assist with commissioning of automation systems, including on-site troubleshooting and optimization.
Solid understanding of electrical engineering principles applied to industrial systems and manufacturing environments.
Demonstrated ability to operate at a lead, or middle-management level, with the maturity and authority to guide engineers and keep projects moving forward.
Strong CAD skills and familiarity with electrical system documentation, including schematics and panel layouts.
Effective communication and collaboration skills for working within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
5-10 years of experience in electrical system design and industrial controls, particularly in complex automated systems.
Experience with lean manufacturing principles and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS).
Exposure to CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) in support of engineering design and optimization.
Experience in designing systems for manufacturing or working within a manufacturing-focused environment.
Experience with large, complex industrial systems such as transportation and handling systems, tunnel washers, separators, feeders, and folders.
Ability to work effectively with international teams and stakeholders, providing visibility and support across global business units.
Interest in career growth with opportunities for upward and lateral mobility across different business units.
Comfort operating in a lead role within industrial controls, with the flexibility to adapt to different project scopes and team structures.
