This Mechanical Engineer role focuses on the design and delivery of HVAC and overall MEP systems for institutional and government projects. You will take full ownership of projects from initial concept and design through construction, performing detailed engineering work, coordinating with stakeholders, and supporting construction administration. This position offers strong growth potential, including the opportunity to progress to Senior Engineer and beyond, while working on complex building systems in a collaborative environment.
Responsibilities
Lead the engineering design of HVAC systems and contribute to overall MEP design for institutional and government projects.
Perform detailed mechanical design engineering, including system layouts, equipment selection, and integration with other building systems.
Complete load calculations and other engineering analyses to size and select HVAC/MEP equipment and systems.
Conduct site surveys to observe and assess existing conditions and gather field data needed for design, without performing testing or disassembly.
Prepare and review detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and construction documents using AutoCAD, and collaborate with teams using Revit when applicable.
Apply relevant building codes and standards such as NYS Energy Code, NYS Mechanical Code, NYS Building Code, and NFPA guidelines throughout the design process.
Support construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, preparing and reviewing change orders, and coordinating with contractors and project stakeholders.
Manage projects from design through construction, taking ownership of schedules, deliverables, and quality of work.
Prepare clear, professional engineering reports and documentation to communicate design intent and project status.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including other engineering disciplines, to ensure coordinated and constructible designs.
Participate in occasional field inspections and site visits to verify installation aligns with design documents and to address field conditions.
Contribute to project estimating efforts when needed by providing technical input and reviewing scope.
Maintain a consistent work schedule while leveraging flexible hours to meet project deadlines and client expectations.
Essential Skills
Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical design engineering, specifically in HVAC or plumbing projects.
Proven experience taking projects from initial design through completion of construction.
Strong background in mechanical engineering design for building systems, including HVAC and MEP.
Proficiency with AutoCAD for engineering design and preparation of drawings (5+ years' experience).
Working knowledge of Revit for MEP design is highly beneficial.
Solid understanding of building codes and standards, including NYS Energy Code, NYS Mechanical Code, NYS Building Code, and NFPA guidelines.
Ability to perform load calculations and other mechanical engineering analyses for building systems.
Experience with construction administration tasks such as responding to RFIs and handling change orders.
Strong written communication skills for clear and concise report writing.
Bachelor's degree in engineering (mechanical or closely related field required).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience in additional engineering disciplines beyond mechanical is a plus.
Experience with project estimating and estimating software is an advantage.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is a plus.
Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus, but not required.
Familiarity with OSHA standards is beneficial.
Experience as a project engineer managing multiple stakeholders and deliverables is helpful.
Demonstrated ability to grow into more Senior responsibilities, including potential promotion to Senior Engineer.
Work Environment
This role is based primarily in an office environment in Bohemia, with occasional site visits, typically starting at about once per week and potentially increasing depending on project needs. In the office, you will work with design and documentation tools such as AutoCAD and, when applicable, Revit, while collaborating closely with other engineers and project team members. Site visits involve field survey work focused on observing and assessing existing conditions; there is no requirement for testing or disassembly of systems. The schedule is flexible, allowing you to choose your start and end times as long as you maintain a consistent pattern that supports project and team needs. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $40.86 - $57.68/hr.
