Job Description:
Johnson & Johnson MedTech is inventing the future of robotic surgery with OTTAVA. Together, we create next-generation robotic systems, surgical instruments, and digital technologies that redefine what's possible for patients in surgery.
We are seeking a Director of Medical Affairs - OTTAVA to provide medical and scientific leadership for a next-generation surgical robotic platform , with a specific emphasis on Instruments and Accessories . This role is ideal for a physician with prior surgical practice experience who is motivated to shape how innovative robotic technologies are translated into safe, effective, and meaningful use in clinical practice.
The Director will lead managers and senior medical professionals in a matrixed, cross-functional environment , oversee medical strategy and evidence generation, and serve as a highly credible clinical partner to surgeons, researchers, and internal stakeholders. Experience with robotic-assisted surgery is strongly preferred.
This position is based at our Cincinnati, Ohio site and requires moderate domestic travel.
Key Responsibilities
Medical & Scientific Leadership
Lead the development and execution of Medical Affairs strategy for surgical robotic Instruments and Accessories across the product lifecycle.
Identify unmet clinical needs and determine appropriate scientific and clinical evidence strategies to address them.
Provide expert medical judgment to inform product development, clinical strategies, risk assessment, and decision-making.
Evidence Generation & Scientific Communication
Collaborate in clinical evidence generation efforts, including study design, real-world evidence, and post-market clinical activities.
Guide scientific communications, peer-reviewed publications, congress activities, and medical education initiatives.
Ensure that data and messaging are scientifically rigorous, clinically relevant, and compliant with applicable regulations.
External Stakeholder Engagement
Build and maintain strong relationships with surgeons, key opinion leaders, academic institutions, and other external stakeholders.
Gather and synthesize medical insights from clinical partners to inform medical strategy, product development, and innovation priorities.
Serve as a trusted scientific peer in external engagements related to surgical robotics and instrumentation.
Clinical Workflow & Innovation
Design and support novel approaches to address real-world surgical workflows, procedural complexity, and technical challenges associated with robotic surgery.
Partner with R&D, engineering, and design teams to ensure instruments and accessories align with clinical practice and surgeon needs.
People Leadership & Organizational Development
Foster a culture of coaching, accountability, and continuous development.
Conduct meaningful career development conversations and provide regular, high-quality feedback.
Contribute to a high-performing team capable of delivering sustained scientific value.
Operational Excellence
Manage performance objectives, compliance activities, and resource planning.
Implement workforce planning and succession strategies to support current and future business needs.
Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with regulatory, compliance, and ethical standards.
Qualifications
MD, DO, or international equivalent physician degree is required.
Prior clinical practice experience as a surgeon is required.
Strong scientific and clinical acumen with experience translating evidence into clinical and strategic insights is required.
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills are essential
Demonstrated experience in Medical Affairs leadership , preferably within medical devices, surgical technology, or related healthcare fields is highly preferred.
Hands-on or collaborative experience with robotic-assisted surgery is extremely beneficial.
Experience supporting or developing surgical instruments and accessories is preferred.
Prior involvement in clinical research, publications, or medical education programs is an asset.
Experience working at the intersection of clinical practice, engineering, and product development is an asset.
Ability and willingness to be in based Cincinnati, Ohio is required.
Ability and willingness to travel up 15-20% , primarily domestic, is required.
The anticipated base pay range for this position is $199,000.00 - $343,275.
Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:
Vacation -120 hours per calendar year
Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado -48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington -56 hours per calendar year
Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays -13 days per calendar year
Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
Parental Leave - 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child
Bereavement Leave - 240 hours for an immediate family member: 40 hours for an extended family member per calendar year
Caregiver Leave - 80 hours in a 52-week rolling period 10 days
Volunteer Leave - 32 hours per calendar year
