As a Physical Education Specialist, you will serve as Minnesota's statewide expert in standards-based physical education, leading initiatives that strengthen the capacity of schools to deliver high-quality instruction, curriculum, assessment, and professional development. You will build and maintain a comprehensive statewide system of training and support-using digital learning tools, professional development, and cross-agency collaboration-to ensure all students receive rigorous, equitable physical education aligned to Minnesota's K-12 Academic Standards so all students are prepared for postsecondary and career success.
You will also facilitate the state's physical education standards review, support rulemaking processes, ensuring that revised standards reflect best practices and comply with state and federal law. In this role, you will provide guidance on policy, graduation requirements, and represent MDE on committees and partnerships. Success in this position requires deep content expertise, strong communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to lead complex statewide initiatives that advance high-quality, standards-based physical education in Minnesota.
As the Physical Education Standards Specialist, you will also:

Assist instructional leaders with innovative ways,
Create a collective and in-depth shared understanding of the partnership,
Support educators with Physical Education implementation across all disciplines,
Provide Technical Assistance to educators within a formative assessment system,
Develop and maintain a statewide system of training and support for districts in the implementation of Physical Education Standards,
Support PELSB K-12 Physical Education licensure review to ensure standards reflect best-practices in Physical Education, and
Analyze data to inform policies and practices related to standards-based education.
Telework
This position is eligible for hybrid telework. Employees living within 50 miles of the office location listed above will be required to work in the office at least 50% of the time each month. Employees may reside outside the state of Minnesota if they live in a state bordering Minnesota and are within 50 miles of the primary work location. Existing employees who were approved to telework from a bordering state and more than 50 miles from their work location before June 1, 2025, may retain this arrangement unless they move farther away.
Minimum Qualifications

This position requires:
Five (5) years of combined professional experience as a Physical Education teacher and Administrator of Physical education programs within an education setting; a master's degree may substitute for 18 months of experience; a bachelor's degree may substitute for one year of experience.
A K-12 teaching license in Physical Education or related K-12 licensure that is or was current within the last 5 years.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience administrating physical education programs at the state or district level,
Experience teaching academic standards in Physical Education to all students, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities (specifically Developmentally Appropriate Physical Education - DAPE),
Experience in standards revision process,
Experience developing and facilitating professional development for educators,
Experience with large scale of Project Management, and
A master's degree or doctorate degree in Physical Education
