Duties Description The New York State Education Department's (NYSED) Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking candidates for an Information Technology Specialist 3 position within the Server Support Team. Reporting to the Information Technology Specialist 4, the ITS 3 serves as an ESXi/VMWare hypervisor administrator. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high level of integrity, strong customer service skills, and the ability to perform advanced technical work on complex projects while producing clear documentation for teammates. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: - Monitor, maintain, and support the VMWare and ESXI virtualization environment;- Maintain ESXi host servers, including lifecycle management and adherence to the refresh cycle;- Manage the SAN storage environment, ensuring proper disk allocation across ESXi and other platforms, and maintain compliance with its refresh cycle;- Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, and implement improvements to enhance reliability, scalability, and cost-efficiency;- Collaborate with ITS staff and internal teams-including Security Operations, Database, and Networking-to implement projects and plans, ensure alignment with architecture and security standards, and provide recommendations to program offices and project managers for improvements and cost savings;- Maintain the Active Directory architecture to support agency wide needs, including certificates, authorities, and related authentication components;- Apply best practices for Server Hypervisor governance, security, and compliance;- Stay current with VMWare, ESXi, SAN and Active Directory authentication offerings and provide strategic recommendations for adoption and optimization;- Utilize scripting languages such as PowerShell and Bash for automation and operational tasks;- Administer and leverage Splunk to identify issues across the architecture and correlate them with other environmental factors;- Support environments subject to regulatory and enterprise security standards;- Manage service requests and workflow using the JIRA Service Desk ticketing system;- Supervise, mentor, and manage information technology professionals, ensuring their growth, development, and successful contribution to the team's goals. Minimum Qualifications NY HELPS This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means no examination is required but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply. At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, without having to compete in an examination. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.NON-COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered for appointment through NY HELPS candidates must meet the open-competitive minimum qualifications for this position. The qualifications are:Five years of professional experience in the following computer related areas: network, server, storage, and systems management; telecommunications, IT customer support and training; computer installation, diagnosis, and repair; technical writing; computer security; knowledge management; database administration, design, and management; internet/intranet development, design, and maintenance; information technology project management; design and development of geographic information systems or computer aided drafting applications; computer programming; business/systems analysis; program design; or program testing.Substitution: A bachelor's degree in any field including or supplemented by 15 semester credit hours in computer science and two years of experience; OR a bachelor's or higher-level degree in any field and three years of experience; OR an associate degree with 15 semester credit hours in a computer science field and four years of experience. Promotion: Current NYSED State employees must have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Information Technology Specialist 2 (Programming) or Information Technology Specialist 2. COMPETITIVE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as an Information Technology Specialist 3.Eligible List Appointment: Candidates must be reachable on the Civil Service eligible list for this title. If you are on the Civil Service eligible list for this title, you may receive a canvass letter. You must complete and return it as instructed on the letter.Section 70.1 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in any of the following titles: Chief Computer Operator, Information Technology Specialist 3 (Data Communications), Information Technology Specialist 3 (Database), Information Technology Specialist 3 (Systems Programming), Information Technology Specialist 4, Information Technology Specialist 4 (Operations), or Mapping Technologist 3. Section 70.4 Transfer to Information Technology Specialist 3: Candidates may be eligible for nomination for transfer under Section 70.4 of the Civil Service Law to Information Technology Specialist 3 if they are a current NYS employee with one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title SG-23 or higher AND have standing on the Information Technology Specialist 3 eligible list AND possess the minimum qualifications.Section 52.6 Transfer: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service in a title allocated SG-21 or higher eligible to transfer under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law. Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a contingent permanent, competitive appointment or a contingent permanent, non-competitive appointment. For 55b/c appointment, candidates must possess the minimum qualifications, a current 55b/c eligibility letter and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Promotions and transfers may change appointees' negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. This position allows for the opportunity to telecommute up to 50% each bi-weekly pay period and is granted at the discretion of the supervisor and the appointing office. This position requires occasional off-shift night and weekend work. This position leads to a maximum salary of $109,650 based on annual performance advances. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position.
