Job Title: Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer will play a critical role in transforming a large, automated glass manufacturing facility by implementing advanced automation solutions, upgrading key facility infrastructure, and driving process and safety improvements. This role focuses heavily on major capital projects, including a cooling tower replacement and other high-impact upgrades, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget. The Mechanical Engineer will directly influence plant reliability, capacity expansion, and innovation as part of a multi-million dollar investment initiative.
Responsibilities
Lead and oversee the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of manufacturing equipment, including conveying systems, automated stacking equipment, batching operations, and combustion furnace operations.
Play a critical role in the cooling tower replacement (CTR), including planning and execution before, during, and after the project, while managing the opportunity cost of missed work during CTR.
Execute capital projects such as cooling tower upgrades, furnace repairs, batch house reliability improvements, tempering line enhancements, and new warehouse infrastructure, ensuring delivery on time and within budget.
Read, interpret, modify, and create technical drawings, schematics, and computer-generated models to support equipment upgrades and process improvements.
Generate mechanical requirements, scope, and cost estimates for capital projects and equipment upgrades.
Initiate, lead, and drive capital expenditure (CAPEX) projects from concept through completion, ensuring alignment with operational, safety, and reliability objectives.
Partner closely with contractors, vendors, and suppliers to coordinate and complete project work effectively and safely.
Provide hands-on training and technical support to Maintenance and Production departments to ensure proper operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment.
Investigate equipment failures and chronic issues, perform root cause analysis, and recommend and implement effective solutions to improve manufacturing processes and reliability.
Support and participate in reliability events and initiatives aimed at improving uptime, equipment performance, and overall plant efficiency.
Support and enhance the reliability of production equipment by applying preventative and predictive maintenance principles and best practices.
Lead project teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment, coordinating activities, setting priorities, and ensuring clear communication across functions.
Work on multiple improvement projects simultaneously, including efficiency, yield, safety, and sustaining engineering initiatives, while effectively prioritizing work.
Collaborate cross-functionally to build strong working relationships and ensure project goals align with production, maintenance, and business objectives.
Essential Skills
Experience with fluid systems, including air, cooling water, pure water, and related mechanical systems.
Practical mechanical design experience applied in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
Experience providing maintenance support for manufacturing equipment and systems.
Proven experience leading projects in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Experience leading a team and coordinating work across multiple stakeholders.
Ability to prioritize work effectively and manage multiple projects at the same time.
Hands-on approach to problem solving and project execution, not limited to desk-based design work.
Strong ability to build relationships and collaborate cross-functionally with maintenance, production, and external partners.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and/or other CAD packages.
Experience with practical mechanical design, fabrication, and manufacturing support for production equipment.
Experience with preventative and predictive maintenance methodologies and tools.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent mechanical engineering discipline.
Manufacturing engineering and manufacturing processes, ideally within a fast environment such as glass manufacturing.
Experience working on CAPEX projects, including planning, budgeting, and execution.
Familiarity with tempering lines, cooling towers, batch house operations, and warehouse-related equipment is beneficial.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to provide clear technical guidance and training.
Demonstrated ability to contribute ideas and solutions that improve safety, efficiency, yield, and reliability.
Work Environment
This role is based at a 685,000 square foot automated glass production facility in Richburg, South Carolina, specializing in cutting-edge flat glass for residential applications. The environment combines a range of technologies from simple mechanical systems to highly sophisticated automated equipment, including conveying systems, automated stacking equipment, batching operations, combustion furnaces, tempering lines, and large-scale fluid and cooling systems. The facility is highly project-driven, with significant upcoming capital investments, including an approximately $80 million multi-year program focused on plant upgrades, capacity expansion, and advanced automation. Work is fast-paced and dynamic, with multiple concurrent projects that provide variety and continuous learning. The culture is principle-based and team-oriented, emphasizing collaboration, ingenuity, and being a trusted partner to internal and external customers. The Mechanical Engineer will spend time both on the plant floor and in an office or engineering space, engaging directly with equipment, maintenance and production teams, and external contractors.
