Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
The mechanical engineering group seeks a Mechanical Engineer to lead, design, and deliver advanced mechanical solutions for integration into autonomous systems, with a strong focus on underwater and oceanographic applications. You will drive system and subsystem mechanical designs across the full product lifecycle, from concept and analysis through first article, testing, integration, and transition to manufacturing. In this role, you apply core mechanical engineering principles to research, develop, design, and verify robust solutions, while creating complete technical data packages for new and existing products. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, supporting both engineering and manufacturing in all phases of design and production.
Responsibilities
Lead mechanical design efforts for systems and subsystems used in autonomous and underwater applications, including military and commercial oceanography products.
Apply mechanical engineering principles and techniques to research, develop, design, and test verified mechanical and electromechanical solutions.
Complete product lifecycle analyses and develop comprehensive technical data packages for new and existing designs.
Support both new product development and ongoing manufacturing efforts in mechanical design and implementation.
Select appropriate materials for underwater applications, considering corrosion resistance and structural performance.
Perform structural analysis, with finite element analysis experience highly desired, to validate designs under expected operating conditions.
Design and implement electronic packaging solutions suitable for underwater and marine environments.
Create and maintain detailed 3D CAD and solid modeling using tools such as SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
Use Enterprise PDM (EPDM) or similar systems to manage 3D models, drawings, and associated documentation.
Communicate design concepts, changes, and issues clearly to engineering, manufacturing, sales, marketing, and other relevant departments.
Research, develop, and plan the design of mechanical and electromechanical products specifically for underwater applications.
Oversee and coordinate activities related to the fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical and electromechanical products and systems.
Support Sales and Marketing teams by providing engineering input for special quotes and proposals.
Prepare and provide clear documentation to support manufacturing processes and design intent.
Estimate labor requirements and material costs for proposed designs and applications to support project planning and quoting.
Build proto@types and test fixtures for new designs and update existing designs and products as needed.
Perform project management duties as assigned, including tracking progress, coordinating tasks, and meeting project milestones.
Collaborate effectively with all departments to ensure mechanical designs and implementations meet performance, cost, and schedule objectives.
Perform other related engineering and project duties as assigned.
Essential Skills
Proven experience in mechanical design, including new product development and support of manufacturing activities.
Proficiency with 3D CAD and solid modeling tools, including SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
Demonstrated ability in material selection for underwater and marine applications with a strong understanding of corrosion considerations.
Experience with structural analysis; finite element analysis (FEA) experience is highly desired.
Strong skills in electronic packaging design for mechanical and electromechanical systems.
Hands-on experience building proto@types and test fixtures for mechanical products.
Experience with Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA).
Knowledge and practical use of Enterprise PDM (EPDM) or similar product data management systems to support 3D modeling tools.
Manufacturing and design experience with marine or underwater products.
Familiarity with mechanical engineering standards and best practices.
Ability to estimate labor and material costs for mechanical designs and applications.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey design intent and technical issues to cross-functional teams.
Ability to oversee and coordinate fabrication, installation, and repair activities for mechanical and electromechanical systems.
Capability to perform project management tasks related to mechanical engineering projects.
5 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor's degree in a related field, or 3 years of relevant experience with a Master's degree in a related field, or a PhD or Juris Doctorate in a related field with no prior experience required.
Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance as required for the role.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience supporting both engineering and manufacturing teams across all phases of the product lifecycle.
Experience in mechanical and electromechanical product design for underwater and oceanographic applications.
Familiarity with integrated logistics support (ILS) principles is beneficial.
Experience working within a cross-functional design team environment.
Understanding of DFMA methodologies to optimize designs for cost-effective manufacturing and assembly.
Experience using tools such as Jira or similar systems for tracking work, issues, or projects.
Knowledge of product data management (PDM) processes and workflows.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to develop practical, robust solutions in challenging environments.
