Job Overview
The Center for Security and Emerging Technology (CSET) (http://cset.georgetown.edu) , under the School of Foreign Service, is hiring a Data Scientist. This role is on CSET's Data Team (https://cset.georgetown.edu/research-topic/data/) , working collaboratively with software engineers, data analysts, and research fellows to maintain CSET's data infrastructure, make data analytically useful through extraction, classification, clustering, annotation, and entity resolution, and produce rigorous policy research and high-quality data resources. This position will contribute to a new project focused on improving bibliometric data, developing methods and metrics to identify emerging areas in science and technology, and providing open data and infrastructure to support research and decision making, including improving CSET's Map of Science (https://sciencemap.eto.tech/) and related tools.

CSET is a research organization focused on studying the security impacts of emerging technologies, supporting academic work in security and technology studies, and delivering nonpartisan analysis to technologists and policymakers. CSET's Emerging Technology Observatory (https://eto.tech/) is a free public platform for data and insight on critical emerging technology issues. Building on CSET's unique data and analytic capabilities, ETO provides analytic tools and datasets to help users across government, academia, nonprofits and the private sector understand and act on global emerging technology trends.
About the Role:
The Data Scientist will report to CSET's Director of Data Science and Research and have responsibility for:
Building and maintaining data pipelines and data processing techniques for large datasets using Airflow;
Designing, evaluating, and implementing solutions, including AI-enabled solutions and advanced modeling, to improve the quality and utility of datasets and enable new analytic capabilities;
Ingesting structured and unstructured datasets into Google Cloud Platform (GCP);
Documenting and communicating CSET methods and data resources to internal and external audiences;
Collaboratively developing research designs and identifying appropriate data and methods;
Interpreting results and drawing valid inferences from data to support CSET research and publications;
Communicating substantive findings from data for policy audiences, via accessible visualizations, written outputs, web interfaces, and presentations.
Monitoring trends and developments in AI, ML, biotechnology, and national security policy
Contributing to CSET's organizational development, including internal working groups, seminars, and discussions; and supporting and mentoring colleagues

Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, or a quantitative field (e.g. economics);
A minimum of 5 years of professional quantitative or statistical analysis experience (can include graduate coursework);
Proficiency with SQL and Python;
Experience working with code management platforms such as GitHub;
Familiarity working in cloud computing environments (e.g. Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure)
Ability to process and analyze datasets, and interpret them to make decisions;
Ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative team environment including people from nontechnical backgrounds;
Strong project management skills;
Clear written and verbal communication;
Motivated, enthusiastic, intellectually curious and self-driven

Preferred Additional Qualifications
Our ideal applicant would have at least 1-2 of the following additional attributes:
Natural Language Processing (NLP) experience

Experience incorporating ML or LLMs into data processing workflows
Experience working with bibliometric datasets (e.g. publications, patents, citations)
Experience working with multi-lingual data

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$80,429.00 - $157,238.93
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University's business needs and external factors.
