We are seeking an experienced Elevator & Escalator Training Instructor to support our four-year apprenticeship program and deliver impactful classroom and hands-on instruction. In this role, you will directly influence the development of journey-level technicians responsible for maintaining a fleet of more than 900 elevators and escalators, even as we modernize systems across dozens of stations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education
Associate degree in Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical Engineering, or vocational or technical school degree, or related field.
In lieu of an Associate degree, high school diploma or GED with two (2) years of experience in an elevator and/or escalator trade or related mechanical/electrical field in addition to the below experience.
Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of experience as a training instructor, on-the-job mentor in elevator/escalator maintenance or a related mechanical/electrical field.
Certification/Licensure

Bachelor degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

Job Summary:
The Elevator/Escalator Training Instructor position is technical, vocational training work of a difficult nature involving the research, analysis, development, and implementation of training courses for the Office of Elevators and Escalators (ELES). The employee is responsible for instruction in operation, practical application, associated equipment training, both in the classroom and in the field, and evaluation of the student progress throughout the course of study. The employee is also responsible for developing and administering promotion examinations. The Elevator/Escalator Training Instructor is supervised by the Supervisor, Technical Skills Training through periodic conferences, review of completed assignments, and day-to-day interactions.
Essential Functions
Develops and conducts a comprehensive instructional program to meet the full range of ELES training objectives to ensure employees receive all required training information related to their job duties.
Conducts theoretical and practical hands-on training, both in the classroom and in the field, for represented and supervisory-level employees to ensure are comfortable with hands-on and classroom instruction.
Instructs and demonstrates utilizing applicable technical data, tools, precision measuring and/or specialized equipment, and correct inspection/maintenance procedures to ensure employees become familiar with tools related to their specific job.
Evaluates student employee performance by testing student comprehension through written or other practical testing means, to ensure employees acquire full understanding of training material.
Maintains current knowledge of the modifications and changes of ELES systems and equipment and integrates appropriate changes into lesson plans and vocational training curriculum in a timely manner.
Incorporates up-to-date training techniques into training sessions (e.g., lecture, demonstration, student participation, question and answer, and student evaluation). Keeps student employees engaged in the training.
Maintains state-of-the-art knowledge of elevator and escalator technologies.
Prepares and maintains current training aids, video tapes, view graphs, equipment simulators, and mock-ups, and confirms the availability of classroom space and all necessary equipment for scheduled training.
Supervises employee trainees during participation in scheduled training which includes ensuring compliance with WMATA directives, standard operating procedures, safety and operating rules, time accountability, and complaint resolution.
Other Functions
Maintains and promotes awareness and accountability with safety policies and procedures while performing job functions. Promotes a positive safety culture and encourages reporting of safety concerns consistent with our Agency Safety Plan, other regulatory requirements within the Safety Management System and just culture principles.
