Summary This position is assigned to the Building and Maintenance Unit, Maintenance and Repair Section, Engineering Service, at the Miami VA Healthcare System (MVAHS). For he/she shall be assigned maintenance and repair duties as deemed necessary by the Building Maintenance Unit Foreman. Responsibilities Duties include, but are not limited to: Painting one-of-a-kind pieces of casework such as consoles and cabinets. Work from oral instructions, blueprints, work orders and rough sketches. Plan and lay out work to be done, select the proper tools, determine materials to be used and accomplish the work in accordance with appropriate methods and accepted trade practices. Ensure site is clean of all debris and equipment upon completion of work. Erect or suspend scaffolding in the performance of duties and be responsible for the proper care and maintenance of tools and equipment. Mix all @types of paints such as base coat paint, interior paints and finishing exterior paints. Skilled in the application of paints in around door frames, window frames, walls as well as molding and base cover and in accenting areas. Occasionally, they may handle materials and equipment that weigh 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and over. The work is done inside and outside, and dirt, spray, and fumes are usually present. The painting workers are sometimes required to prepare and coat surfaces outside in bad weather. Occasionally, they may be required to wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Painters are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. They may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broke bones. Will move furniture in rooms to be painted, will request assistance when needed. Must wear a respirator and disposable clothing including coveralls and cover for head, hands and feet when working in areas of possible asbestos contamination. Employee generally works outdoors, but works inside occasionally for short periods of time and is exposed to outside weather conditions.
