The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM) is a proficient clinical leader responsible for the 24/7 operational management of their designated units. The incumbent functions as a role model, educator, and practitioner, providing direct patient care as needed while supporting the Nurse Manager (NM) with critical administrative and supervisory functions. They demonstrate a high level of clinical expertise and utilize evidence-based nursing standards to manage complex health conditions and improve patient outcomes. Beyond clinical duties, the ANM is accountable for the direction and supervision of staff, including orientation, professional development, and performance evaluation. They act as a supervisor at the direction of the Nurse Manager, ensuring that clinical and nursing objectives align with the organization's strategic vision. The duties of the Registered Nurse (Assistant Nurse Manager) include but not limited to: Assists the Nurse Manager in daily functions, collaboratively planning and assigning work to subordinate staff to ensure a high quality of care. Provides oversight for staffing and clinical counseling, and initiates disciplinary actions in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. Leads the interdisciplinary team in utilizing the nursing process, assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation-to manage complex patient situations. Initiates and evaluates interdisciplinary projects and innovative programs to improve departmental performance and patient care effects. Leads initiatives to improve the Veteran experience by resolving care coordination issues, negative trends, or environmental concerns beyond the immediate practice setting. Ensures staff follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for medical equipment and work practices while maintaining compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards. Conserves resources effectively by ensuring the responsible use of medical supplies and equipment. Identifies discipline-specific educational needs and contributes to the professional growth, orientation, and training of personnel. Encourages prompt reporting of accidents or unsafe environmental conditions and ensures staff practice safe body mechanics. Demonstrates the skills necessary to coordinate, and/or identify discipline-specific education, and contribute to the professional growth and development of personnel In collaboration with Nurse Manager initiates interdisciplinary projects to improve organizational/ departmental performance and evaluates the effect on patient care. The ANM assists the Nurse Manager in the daily functions and collaboratively plans and assigns work to subordinate staff members to ensure high quality of care. He/she provides input on evaluation of the performance of subordinates as well as input on recommendations for appointments, advancements, or reassignments. He/she functions as nurse supervisor and provides oversight for staffing in collaboration with Nurse Manager. Qualifications Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE); OR Individuals attending a master's level bridge program in nursing who have completed coursework equivalent to a bachelor's level degree in Nursing may have opportunity to become registered as a nurse with a state licensing board prior to completion of the bridge program. Upon achievement of a State license, the individual may be appointed on temporary basis and later converted to a permanent appointment upon successful completion and graduation from the bridge program. Credit for foreign nursing education higher that associate degree/entry level requires a formal degree equivalency validation from a recognized equivalency evaluation accepted by VA such as International Consultants of Delaware (ICD). Nurse I, Level III Demonstrates proficiency in practice based on conscious and deliberate planning. Self-directed in goal setting for managing complex client situations. An ADN or Diploma in Nursing AND 2 years of professional nursing experience in which one year is equivalent to Nurse I, Level 2; OR a BSN and 1 year of professional nursing experience equivalent to the Nurse I, Level 2; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) and no additional professional nursing experience; OR a Master's degree in a related field with a BSN and no additional professional nursing experience. Nurse II Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. Preferred Experience: The ideal candidate is a proficient professional nurse with a comprehensive background in cardiovascular care and device management. Preferred qualifications include: Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or higher from a program accredited by CCNE or ACEN is highly preferred. Clinical Expertise: Two to three (2-3) years of professional Registered Nurse experience in a high-acuity procedural or critical care environment, specifically within a Cardiac Catheterization Lab (Cath Lab), Gastroenterology (GI)/Endoscopy, or Critical Care Unit (ICU/CCU). Leadership/Management: Demonstrated experience in a nursing leadership or management role (e.g., Charge Nurse, Nurse Preceptor, or Unit Coordinator), with a proven track record of supervising staff, managing daily unit operations, and improving clinical outcomes.
