7TH PROBATE DISTRICT COURT -- EMMET COUNTY JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION: Deputy Register/Court Clerk (part-time)

SUPERVISOR: Probate Court Judge, Probate Court Administrator

LOCATION: Probate Court, Emmet County Building SALARY: Wage Grid

FLSA CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Court Administrator, this position performs the duties of the Probate and Juvenile Register as assigned, as well as general office assistance. This is a front-line position providing service to the general public, attorneys, and others who require court services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*

Reviews documents presented for filing to determine compliance with statutory requirements and communicates any deficiencies, reconciles fiduciary inventories and annual accounts and prepares files for hearing, notices and conducts deficient fiduciary conferences, and drafts court orders and notice.

Maintains probate and family division calendars, schedules hearings in accordance with statutory time frames, and ensures notices and proofs of service.

Serves as the office receptionist, with duties including answering the telephone, greeting the public, opening/distributing mail, creating/circulating interoffice communications, filing, and other clerical tasks.

Assists in compiling and maintaining instruction packets for use by the public and ensures compliance with current statutes and court rules.

Serves as court recorder and as Probate or Juvenile Register, as needed.

Attends conferences and trainings as required to implement legislative changes.

Performs other duties as assigned by the Probate Court Judge or Court Administrator.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

This position demands attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to communicate clearly with both members of the public and legal professionals.

Familiarity with the requirements of Michigan's Estates and Protected Individuals Code, the Juvenile Code, and the Mental Health Code.

Must be discreet with confidential case information.

Ability to remain calm in stressful situations and to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE*

High school graduate or equivalent with two years' experience in related field is required. Associates degree in a related field is preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES REQUIRED

Must be willing to comply with the Model Code of Conduct for Michigan Trial Court Employees.

Must have or be willing to obtain Court Recorder certification.

Must possess a valid Michigan driver's license.
