Responsibilities
We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist supporting AI for Radio Frequency (RF) Signals Processing and Sensing Research. This role bridges foundational research and practical implementation to address cutting-edge challenges in modern communication, RF-enabled object detection and monitoring, AI-driven RF communication methods, and signal processing. Help shape the future of national security and scientific discovery by applying AI/ML to some of the most challenging problems in communications, remote sensing, and signal processing.
In this role, you'll combine knowledge of RF and sensor physics with experience leading research and hands-on expertise in developing and deploying advanced AI/ML models for AI-driven RF signals processing, communications, and sensing. You will work at the intersection of advanced research and operational implementation to deliver mission-ready solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct and lead research and implement AI/ML algorithms for RF signal processing, including but not limited to intelligent spectrum awareness, opportunistic sensing, and adaptive communication systems.
Apply machine learning and deep learning techniques to improve the analysis, interpretation, and management of RF signals in noisy, dynamic, or contested environments.
Develop and integrate AI/ML models into RF communication and remote sensing workflows in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
Implement and iterate on novel AI/ML methods to directly address national security problems.
Proto@type and demonstrate edge implementations of RF AI/ML models on hardware.
Reproduce and adapt state-of-the-art models, training methods, and DSP components from academic literature with senior technical guidance but minimal examples and/or author code access.
Mentor junior and peer-level data scientists and software engineers conducting or leading tasks on projects in this research area.
Maintain awareness of emerging technologies in AI, machine learning, remote sensing, and RF technologies to identify opportunities for technical innovation.
Take ownership of defined tasks or small to medium projects, proactively identifying technical challenges and proposing solutions to senior staff or project leads.
Drive the execution of research by?designing, building, and iterating on RF and remote sensing applied research concepts and projects.
Support proposal development and business development by contributing to proposals and/or briefing sponsors.
Build effective working relationships within your immediate team, as well as across interdisciplinary teams at the group or division level.
This position is based in either Richland, WA or Seattle, WA and requires an onsite presence.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
PhD with 1+ years of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, or a related field.
Foundation in the physics and engineering principles of radio frequency (RF), coupled with practical experience applying these concepts in AI/ML workflows.
Experience developing and applying AI/ML methods for RF and sensing.
Experience in complex-valued machine learning.
Strong familiarity with the current AI/ML research landscape, particularly methods and applications relevant to RF signal processing.
Experience in implementing machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques for communications, signal processing, time series, RF applications.
Experience developing, training, and testing machine learning models in frameworks like PyTorch.
Proficiency in Python development and common associated libraries (e.g., pandas, numpy, scipy).
Experience in AI/ML/DL in applied science/research for national security missions.
Demonstrated communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Possession of an active DOE Q clearance.
Possession of an active TS/SCI clearance.

Additional Information
This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a federal security clearance.
A security clearance background investigation includes review of your employment, education, financial, and criminal history, as well as interviews with you and your personal references, neighbors, and co-workers to determine trustworthiness, reliability, and loyalty to the United States. The investigation also examines your foreign connections, drug and alcohol use, foreign influence, and overall conduct.

Background Investigation: Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance with 10 CFR 710, Appendix B.
Drug Testing: All Security Clearance positions are Testing Designated Positions, which means that the applicant selected for hire is subject to pre-employment drug testing, and post-employment random drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy if non-use of illegal drugs, including marijuana, for 12 months cannot be demonstrated.
Testing Designated Position
This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.

Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements
As a national laboratory, PNNL is responsible for adhering to the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which require new employees to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identify Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete the applicable tier of federal background investigation post hire and receive a favorable federal adjudication. The tier of federal background investigation will be determined by job duties and national security or public trust responsibilities associated with the job. All tiers of investigation include a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last 1 to 7 years (depending on the applicable tier of investigation). Illegal drug activities include marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
For foreign national candidates:
If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) Federal risk determination to maintain employment. Once you meet the three-year residency requirement thereafter, you will be required to obtain a PIV credential to maintain employment. The tier of federal background investigation required to obtain the PIV credential will be determined by job duties at the time you become eligible for the PIV credential.
