POSITION OVERVIEW: The Elevator Inspector ensures compliance with the Montana Code Annotated, Administrative Rules of Montana, and the ASME Elevator Safety Code. Working within the Building Codes Program, this position conducts inspections, reviews elevator construction plans, and provides expert guidance to contractors, engineers, and building owners. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Conduct elevator inspections:Perform detailed inspections of commercial and public elevators to verify compliance with applicable codes, safety standards, and permit conditions. Support plan review and permitting:Review elevator construction plans for compliance with seismic and structural requirements; assist with permit issuance and digital recordkeeping. Provide technical guidance:Communicate code requirements and inspection results to contractors, architects, engineers, and property owners in clear, professional language. Develop technical expertise:Learn and apply laws, rules, and technical codes adopted by the State of Montana and the ASME Elevator Safety Code. Ensure safety and compliance:Identify hazards, recommend corrective actions, and document findings in accordance with division policies. Engage in training and certification:Participate in required coursework and obtain or maintain the Qualified Elevator Inspector (QEI) certification within six months of hire. Promote customer service and education:Represent the Department with professionalism, offering constructive and solution oriented assistance to the public. Blueprint interpretation and analysis:Read and interpret construction drawings and technical documents to identify compliance or safety concerns. Communication and customer service:Communicate complex technical information clearly and courteously, maintaining professionalism with contractors, owners, and the public. Conflict resolution and professionalism:Use sound judgment and diplomacy to resolve disputes while ensuring adherence to safety and code requirements. Problem solving and adaptability:Assess varied project conditions, apply practical reasoning, and make informed decisions under changing field environments. Technology proficiency:Use digital inspection systems, mobile devices, and software tools for documentation, recordkeeping, and communication. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education and Experience) Experience as an elevator mechanic or demonstrated familiarity with elevator systems, components, and code requirements, or current possession of a QEI certification. Ability to read and interpret building plans, specifications, and schematic drawings, or willingness to learn through structured training. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to apply technical codes and safety standards to real world conditions. Competence in using computers, email, and digital inspection tools for report writing and data management. Valid driver's license and ability to travel statewide under variable weather and site conditions. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A degree or technical training in construction, building inspection, engineering technology, or a related field may supplement relevant professional experience but is not a substitute for demonstrated skills. Equivalent combinations of education and directly related experience will be considered.
