The MNIT DHS team supports complex and varied technical needs, including systems that provide health care coverage, deliver child protection and welfare services, and provide support for Minnesotans with special needs including mental illness, chemical dependencies, and physical or developmental disabilities.
*Minnesota IT Services may be filling two Student Worker Para Professional positions from this one posting. All applicants will be considered for both vacancies.
As a student worker for Minnesota IT Services (MNIT) at the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) you will support MDH by performing programming adjacent tasks in support of the application development, data, and devops units. An example of the work you will be doing can be seen in this Video produced using actual state employees. As you learn and perform the tasks, you will be encouraged to leverage classroom work and draw on outside experiences to channel recommendations and innovation to relevant managers. You will provide an infusion of inquiry, introspection, and innovation to the MDH IT team. This position requires onsite work daily at 625 Robert Street North, St. Paul, Minnesota.

Education:
Student Worker Eligibility -
To be eligible for an appointment as a Student Worker Paraprofessional, you must be enrolled in a post-secondary or graduate educational program or plan to enroll within three months. Students may be "off" for the summer or for one semester/quarter and remain employed as a student worker, but such absences cannot exceed one semester/quarter in a year. If you are enrolled at a credit-granting institution you must carry at least six semester/nine quarter credits. If enrolled at a non-credit granting institution or one that only offers one credit per class, you must be taking two or more classes per semester/quarter. Any lesser credit (class) load will be treated as a semester/quarter off. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least two courses or making progress on a dissertation. You will be asked to complete an Educational Verification form prior to appointment.
Experience:
Demonstrable experience programming in Java or a JavaScript framework such as (React, Vue or Angular). Classroom project is sufficient.
Has worked on a team or a group for a project that was completed successfully.
Successful completion of Data Structures or database class or demonstrable professional experience working with a relational database (such as Oracle, PostgreSQL and/or MSSQL)
Basic knowledge of Cloud Computing
Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in a manner that facilitates mutual understanding.
Customer-focused approach grounded in active listening, empathy, and solution-oriented problem-solving to deliver positive user experiences.
Preferred Qualifications
Successful completion of 2 years in an IT program.
Strong interpersonal skills, with a focus on rapport-building, listening, and interviewing skills.
Understanding of computing enough to be able to problem solve issues related to projects and conceptualize end products.
Understanding of the principles of Information Systems and computer technology
Ability to familiarize themselves with department policies, procedures, program activities.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to help coordinate the expertise of staff having different backgrounds and areas of content expertise.
Knowledge of version Control Systems.
