Contract Administration
Learn to perform field testing of construction materials to ensure that tests are performed accurately, timely, thoroughly, and according to specification.
Learn to inspect contractor's work and methods so that the construction work meets the requirements of the plans, specification, and special provisions.
Learn to document and summarize all appropriate data necessary to pay contractor promptly, to ensure data integrity and compliance with government regulations.
Learn to perform basic/routine technical computer-aided drafting and designing (CADD) in accordance with CADD data standards to meet deadlines.
Snow and Ice
Learn to perform all activities required to ensure snow and ice control in a timely, safe, efficient manner resulting in public safety, free flowing traffic, and minimal delay.

Contract Administration
Obtains representative samples of bituminous, concrete, aggregate, grading and base materials and performs construction materials acceptance tests (such as gradations, density, air, beam, cylinder and slump) in the field as required to ensure quality of materials.
Performs and implements material testing processes so that test failures are corrected.
Reads and interprets plans and specifications to ensure contractor compliance.
Checks the dimensions and tolerances of constructed roadway features to ensure conformance to plans and specifications.
Measures, computes and documents pay items to ensure proper payment for work done under the contract.
Monitors the work of contractor personnel to ensure compliance with established processes, practices, and specifications.
Assists the Plant Monitor to ensure materials meet specifications and requirements.
Assists in developing and designing elements for construction plans to ensure MnDOT, AASHTO, and FHWA standards are met.
Snow and Ice
Maintains roadways for snow and ice control
Prepares and inspects winter equipment
Performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup
Performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals
Performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences, replacing mailboxes.
Maintains documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management
Performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles
NOTE: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetylmorphine (6-AM).
The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.
Minimum Qualifications
Exam Part 1: The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist l evel can be achieved with:
Experience: A combination of one year of experience in any of the following areas: contract administration (roadway and/or bridge construction), bridge maintenance, bridge safety inspection, design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits, planning, pre-design, right of way, road surface/roadside maintenance, snow/ice, surveys, and/or traffic engineering. Credit will also be awarded for professional residential or commercial building construction.
OR
Education: A two-year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees: Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Licenses at the TG level:
Have and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction (or the ability to obtain within 6 months from dates of hire).
Certification(s) at the TG level: Must have ability to obtain all required certifications within 12 months from date of hire):
Aggregate Production Tester; Grading and Base Tester; Concrete Field Tester; Bituminous Street Inspector; Construction Site Management; ADA Construction Certification
Exam Part 1: The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Associate level can be achieved with:
Valid Driver's License at the time of hire. Class B License with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement within six months from date of hire, or by August 01, 2026.
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Exam Part 2: Candidates that are made a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 5 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 5 or higher. (Acceptance of the offer is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test.) If you've previously taken and passed the math and reading assessments, you may be exempt from retesting. Please check with your district HR office.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Student Worker, Transportation Associate
Preferred Certifications:
Level 1 Aggregate Production Certification (required for testing materials and gradations).
Physical Requirements
General Office
While performing the duties if this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use wrists, hands, and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Technical/Field
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to work outside exposed to the weather elements (both cold and hot) on an occasional basis. The employee will occasionally drive a motor vehicle in off-road conditions. Periodically, the employee will walk on even and uneven/sloping ground. The employee must frequently and continually rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, sitting, kneeling, and squatting). The employee will operate machinery and testing equipment (using vision and hearing) under varying temperatures. The employee may occasionally move up to 100 pounds by pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying. The employee must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment to protect the head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet from injury.
