About Logansport State Hospital:
Logansport State Hospital is a state-operated inpatient psychiatric hospital for adults with mental illness. ?Using an interdisciplinary approach and evidence-based programming, we promote recovery and return of the individual to the community.?
Salary Statement:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $45,422.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
A Day in the Life:
Behavioral & Therapeutic Skills
Monitor de-escalation techniques, ensuring the staff are following the principles of de-escalation and re-direction for prevention of restraint and management of behavior.
Demonstrate?and monitor staff to ensure therapeutic interventions using the principles of de-escalation, re-direction, and approved techniques for the prevention and management of behavior.
Assist in the development and monitoring of special attendant patient programming.
Assist in implementation of resident's treatment plan including giving medication.
Security & Safety Skills
Escort?residents to and from various activity and therapy areas within the building and off-grounds for medical, dental or legal needs, ensuring safety and maximum security.
Ensure security of residents and maintain orderliness, which occasionally requires restraining unruly, dangerous residents.
Secure doors, search visitors (if applicable per facility policy), operate radio systems, issue keys and escort visitors to various areas of the unit.
Conduct searches of patient's rooms, searching for possible contraband and ensure the safety of each patient.
Operate state vehicles to transport patients for scheduled outings, particularly during Special Attendant staffing shortages.
Patient Care & Support
Attend all patient admissions to ensure patient programming.
Assist with patient care and patient programming in the unit.
Operational & Administrative Duties
Observe, report,?and record?the condition and behavior of residents.
Participate?in process improvements for the facility.
Complete Special Attendant staffing and scheduling assignment sheets
Project staffing needs at least three (3) days in advance and proactively secure coverage to prevent service disruptions.
Approve or deny time off and trade request slips for Special Attendants
Perform routine clerical functions, including answering ward/unit telephone during Special Attendant shortages.
Ensure employees assigned to 1:1 hospital duties receive timely relief for lunch breaks to maintain compliance with labor standards and promote staff well-being.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Prepare and submit Blue Sheets to document and justify overtime requests for Special Attendants.
Manage payroll for direct reports using UKG, ensuring accuracy and timely submission.
Talent Development & Performance Management
Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities for professional development.
Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate employee performance to ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

What You'll Need for Success:
Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

Specialized knowledge of, and ability to apply, psychiatric nursing care practices including administering medications.
Specialized knowledge of, and ability to apply, behavior modification, self-defense and restraining techniques as needed without injury to residents.
Working knowledge of residents' behavior and ability to anticipate and deal with behavior changes on a daily basis.
Working knowledge of institution and unit procedures
Displaying Technical Expertise
Knowledge of basic computer skills
Ability to perform and assist residents in performing housekeeping duties and daily living activities.
Communicating Effectively and Establishing Relationships
Excellent interpersonal & communication skills.
Ability to write reports and keep records, and charts accurately
Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations and to control adverse behavior.
Ability to follow directions
Managing Work Performance
Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow
Ability to be on high alert for your entire shift, up to 16 hours
Must be able to work overtime as needed
Developing Talent
Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
Experience and Education
Certified or willing to become certified in professional rescuer CPR/AED
High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE)
2 years of successful work experience in a hospital setting, applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role, may be considered.
Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
