What You Will Do
The Engineering Services Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory delivers innovative engineering solutions that support the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. This position is within the Engineering Services Division Office (ES-DO) where teams implement the Conduct of Engineering (COE) program to support systems, structure and component modifications and new installations. This position supports nuclear, accelerator or non-nuclear facilities across the Laboratory's 38 square miles site. Engineering Services provides consulting support across all project phases, including scoping, design, construction, commissioning, and operations.
Note: This position will be filled at either the Engineer 1/Engineer 2 level depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Mechanical Engineer Level 1 $96,600 - $158,000
As a Mechanical Engineer 1 with the Engineering Services Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory, you will serve as a member of a multidisciplinary design organization supporting one of the Laboratory's Facilities Operations Directorates (FODs). You will contribute to multiple concurrent projects that shape and sustain the Laboratory's facilities and infrastructure in support of its scientific and national security mission. At the Engineer 1 level, you will work under the close technical guidance and mentorship of a senior engineer. Assignments will be clearly defined and appropriately scoped to support your technical development and growing independence. Key responsibilities include:
Support mechanical system design, analysis, and documentation efforts.
Perform HVAC load calculations and related engineering analyses.
Assist with equipment selection and evaluation in coordination with manufacturers' representatives.
Contribute to the development of design deliverables, including drawings, specifications, calculations, Test and Inspection Plans (TIPs), and Statements of Special Inspections (SSIs).
Apply applicable codes, standards, and Laboratory requirements under supervision.
Support construction activities, including review of submittals and Requests for Information (RFIs).
Promote energy-efficient design through appropriate application of HVAC technologies and building control systems.
Develop sound engineering judgment through hands-on project experience and mentorship.
Mechanical Engineer Level 2 $106,400 - $176,000
In addition to performing the responsibilities of the Mechanical Engineer 1 role, a Mechanical Engineer 2 applies increased technical depth and exercises greater independence. At the Engineer 2 level, you will be expected to execute appropriately scoped tasks and projects with limited supervision. You will independently manage mechanical engineering efforts across project phases while seeking guidance on complex or high-risk issues as needed.
Independently lead mechanical engineering tasks from project scoping through construction support.
Develop and review engineering calculations, analyses, and design documents with minimal oversight.
Coordinate mechanical design activities with multidisciplinary teams.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with project stakeholders and customers.
Support technical development and knowledge sharing within the mechanical design team.
Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, standards, and sustainability initiatives.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Ability to prepare engineering calculations and apply fundamental mechanical engineering principles.
Proficiency with engineering analysis tools and standard design software.
Working knowledge of applicable engineering codes and standards.
Ability to support construction execution, including review of submittals, RFIs, design changes, non-conformance reports, commissioning documentation, and as-built documentation.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Engineer-in-Training designation (any US State).
Additional Job Requirements for Mechanical Engineer Level 2:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Knowledge of HVAC and plumbing building systems.
Understanding of engineering work planning and multidisciplinary design coordination.
Thorough knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and their practical application.
Ability to independently generate and validate engineering calculations.
Demonstrated ability to apply building codes, standards, and sustainable design practices to facility projects.
Education/Experience for Mechanical Engineer 1:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 2 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Education/Experience for Mechanical Engineer 2:
Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Desired Qualifications:
For Engineer 2: Registration as a professional engineer (any US state).
Design experience in nuclear, accelerator or industrial facility operations.
Experience in facilty HVAC, fumehood/glovebox exhaust and piping services.
Experienced in producing designs utilizing AutoCAD and/or Revit tools and work processes.
Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles and procedures.
Work Environment:
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.
