This position will perform routine and complex bacteriological and physical analyses on dairy samples, food, water, and other varied samples submitted by laboratory services clientele using established analytical methods of the Microbiology Unit. The results of these analyses are used in food safety monitoring activities, for certification of products, as evidence in mediation disputes, and as legal evidence for regulatory activities in enforcement of and compliance with state statutes. This position is involved as an equal partner in staffing for rotational weekend and holiday schedules. This position assists in media preparation, sample preparation, dishwashing, and other supportive laboratory activities. Tasks performed are in support of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture's (MDA) regulatory divisions and other external clients and Federal Agencies.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in microbiology or a closely related field.

One year of previous experience working in a food microbiology laboratory.

Additional Required Experience:

Knowledge of the principles, procedures and techniques of microbiology, including excellent aseptic technique and quality control, sufficient to carry out complex microbiological analysis on food samples.

Experience following complex oral and written directions, formulas, and charts.

The ability to effectively communicate technical information orally and in writing to a variety of audiences.

The ability to use computer software including Microsoft Excel and Word to navigate spreadsheets, perform basic statistical analysis and write and edit technical documents.

Strong time management and organizational skills to manage and prioritize a large volume of samples and complete tests by due dates.

The ability to celebrate diversity and a strong commitment to a respectful and inclusive work environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in microbiology or a related field.

Experience working in a food microbiology laboratory.

Experience in microbiological media preparation.

Experience using analytical instruments such as VIDAS or qPCR instrumentation.

Experience enriching, culturing, and isolating pathogenic bacteria from food.

Experience working in an ISO17025 laboratory environment.

Experience using LIMS database.

Physical Requirements

This position exists in an analytical laboratory. As such, all potential safety hazards associated with this @type of environment are assumed to be present. Hazards such as chemical exposure, hot surfaces, compressed gases and mechanical hazards exist in this section. This position must be comfortable working around these hazards and have sufficient knowledge to recognize and prevent harm to themselves or others. This position must be able to function in this environment and must be comfortable wearing personal protective gear.
