We celebrate our successes and take pride in our work Job Overview: The Dillon Unit Manager has supervisory, managerial authority and responsibility for all assigned departmental programs and field activities, property and personnel within its geographic region. The region is defined as Beaverhead County and the western half of Madison County, containing approximately 426,063 surface and subsurface acres of school trust land. Dillon Unit provides direct wildland fire protection on 968,059 acres and County Co-op protection on 2,479,000 acres in Beaverhead and Madison Counties. The Dillon Unit is an active cooperator in the Dillon Interagency Dispatch Center. Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities): /These job functions are the essential duties of the position and are not all-inclusive of all the duties that may be assigned to the incumbent./ Dillon Unit Administration The Dillon Unit Manager administers activities of all Forestry and Trust Land Division programs within the Dillon Unit (DU) along established goals, policies and procedures to accomplish objectives and tasks using sound knowledge of natural resources management, operation manuals, and related federal and state laws. Performs personnel supervision and budget management for the DU. Assures a safe working environment for DU personnel. Assures the management of trust land to produce optimum revenue for the trust beneficiaries while protecting the trust resources. Assures subordinates are consistently and uniformly addressing issues within the programs administered within the Unit. Investigates violations of terms of land use agreements and takes enforcement action. Acts as the principal MEPA decision maker for the DU. Participate as a Department representative in meetings with other agencies (Federal, State, and County), industries and NGO's. Acts as the Line Officer for fires within the Unit and may serve as a line officer or a line officer representative for other work unit/areas. Works directly with the Area Fire Program Managers to support the Direct and County Cooperative fire programs on the Unit. Works with Area Trust Land Manager on issues to support the management of all trust land programs. Supervises the billing, reception and transfer of revenue. Assures the maintenance of DU records. Timber, Agriculture & Grazing, Minerals, Fire, and Real Estate Management The position has responsibility for field level planning, supervision and management. They oversee and help in the implementation of agricultural and grazing lease field evaluations and improvement requests, meet timber sale layout and administration requirements, review easement and land use license requests, and help with gravel permits. Conducts mineral development permitting and inspections. Conduct land sales, exchanges and right of way management. Manages recreational use of DU trust lands. Conducts commercial lease administration and conducts and implements weed management activities. The position needs to monitor and oversee direct and County Coop fire suppression responsibilities of the DU. Incumbent will work with FMO and AFMO to assure the program is running smoothly and DU meets the Department and Area fire needs and responsibilities. Assure the hiring of fire crew occurs annually, and safety briefings and fire training are being done. Work as Agency Representative / Line Officer on large and small complex fire situations. Ability to keep composure in stressful and high stakes scenarios. The incumbent must evaluate the decisions of subordinates and take corrective actions where needed, as well as provide training and leadership to accomplish Department and CLO Area goals and objectives. The incumbent is expected to make weekly contact with subordinates and area staff to analyze and review work progress, confirm priorities and solve problems. Ability to plan, organize and direct a comprehensive and complex natural resource program. Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience) Bachelor's degree in a field of natural resource management, forestry, wildlife biology, fire management, recreation management, range science or directly related with four years of related natural resource management experience that includes program management and supervisory responsibilities. A Master's degree in the above can be substituted to include 3 years of related experience in areas listed. This position must be able to complete field work including the ability to work independently in rough terrain in all weather conditions. This position must be able to work administratively within a wildfire environment.
