GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This entry-level position will travel throughout the state of Wyoming and occasionally out of state to conduct audits of small to medium business entities. This position will verify proper sales tax reporting, use tax, lodging tax, fuel tax, and IFTA/IRP (taxes and fees associated with the trucking industry). You will take part in an extensive on-the-job training program to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct these audits. As part of on-the-job training, you will also assist senior staff members in gaining knowledge and experience in planning and conducting external tax audits of moderately complex to complex business entities to ensure compliance with tax law and increase state revenue by exposing unpaid or underpaid taxes and fees.

Must have good oral and written communication skills to communicate professionally and effectively.
Ability to learn how to conduct audits of multiple tax @types, including sales tax, use tax, fuel tax, tobacco tax, International Fuel Tax Agreement, and International Registration Plan.
Ability to apply accounting principles and business practices in obtaining financial data and all information needed to complete an audit.
Ability to analyze tax history records, financial records, and other relevant financial data to verify the accuracy of taxes being remitted to the state.
Ability to work under limited supervision, independently and in a team setting to accomplish personal and organizational goals.
Ability to assist team members in reviewing and analyzing relevant information to ensure compliance with state taxation rules and regulations and international agreements.
Ability to make informed decisions about tax liability, accurately compile audit data into detailed work papers, and write accurate audit reports detailing the completed audit steps and analysis.
Ability to perform detailed reviews of all work to ensure audit conclusions are supported by the data reviewed and comply with auditing and departmental standards.
Ability to testify at the State Board of Equalization, Federal District Court proceedings to defend audit processes, audit findings, and conclusions.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Preference may be given to those with a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university (typically in accounting, economics, statistics, or finance).
**M ust have a valid driver's license.
KNOWLEDGE:
Basic knowledge of accounting principles and business practices.
Basic knowledge of different accounting systems and accounting software programs.
Basic knowledge of general ledgers, income statements, depreciation schedules, and accrual reports.
Basic knowledge of Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS) and Generally Accepted Accounting Practices (GAAP).
Basic knowledge of sampling standards and procedures used in analyzing large sets of financial data.
Basic knowledge and skills with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to learn about diverse accounting and software systems used by a variety of business entities.
Ability to learn basic knowledge and apply Wyoming Tax Statutes, rules, and regulations for sales tax, use tax, tobacco tax, fuel tax, IFTA, and IRP.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Finance or Accounting)
Experience:
0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Auditing) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Auditor I
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Auditing) with acquired knowledge at the level of an Auditor I

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must have a valid driver's license.
Travel is required throughout the state of Wyoming and occasionally out of state.
