Attorney 4 (Employment Law) Opportunity
Join the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) Legal Section as a senior attorney specializing in employment law and personnel matters that impact a statewide workforce of more than 4,000 employees.
This position provides legal counsel and representation to DOTD on complex employment law issues involving Civil Service rules, disciplinary matters, workplace investigations, discrimination claims, and federal and state employment laws. The work handled by this role directly influences departmental policies, employee relations practices, and legal compliance across the agency.
The selected candidate will work closely with DOTD leadership, Human Resources, and program managers to provide legal guidance, defend the department in employment-related litigation, and support sound personnel decision-making.
We are seeking candidates who can manage complex legal matters while maintaining professionalism, accuracy, and sound legal judgment. Successful candidates are able to interpret statutes and regulations, analyze legal risk, and communicate legal guidance clearly to leadership and non-legal professionals.
This role requires the ability to work independently while coordinating with agency leadership, Human Resources, and external legal partners.
This position provides the opportunity to handle complex employment law matters, represent the Department in administrative and court proceedings, and play a key role in shaping employment policies and practices across a large statewide agency.

Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice law plus three years of experience as a practicing attorney.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
As an Employment Attorney in the DOTD Legal Section, you may:
Represent DOTD in Civil Service appeals, administrative hearings, and state and federal court proceedings involving employment matters
Develop legal strategies, prepare pleadings, conduct discovery, and participate in hearings and trials related to personnel matters
Advise DOTD leadership and Human Resources on complex employment law issues, disciplinary actions, and workplace investigations
Review and analyze employment-related complaints including discrimination, harassment, and workplace misconduct matters
Assist with responses to EEOC charges and coordinate with the Louisiana Attorney General's Office when necessary
Provide legal guidance related to Civil Service rules, employee discipline, and personnel actions
Review departmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal and state employment laws
Conduct legal research and prepare legal memoranda, policy recommendations, and formal legal opinions
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); or by detail to special duty.
Compensation: Additional compensation may be considered for applicants who possessextraordinary job-related qualifications or credentials in accordance withState Civil Service Rule 6.5(g) and DOTD policy. Any such consideration is subject to approval and applicable pay limitations.
