Job Description

The Office of the District Attorney, Bronx County ("BXDA") is charged with the twin goals of ensuring public safety and striving for equal justice for the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community. By "Pursuing Justice with Integrity," the BXDA places a focus on assistance for crime victims while simultaneously ensuring fairness to defendants. Moreover, the BXDA aims to balance the need to seek appropriate punishment for certain crimes while recognizing when punitive measures do not adequately advance justice. By recognizing these significant distinctions and acting accordingly, BXDA has established a standard of excellence in the representation of the Bronx community at large, which continues to grow stronger every day.

In furtherance of this mission, the BXDA seeks experienced and enthusiastic Trial Preparation Assistant, Level III to assist the Director and Deputy Director of Professional Staff for the Investigations Division with overseeing Trial Prep Assistants Level 2 (TPA 2) and Trial Prep Assistants Level 1 (TPA 1) by training and assisting them, keeping track of professional staff assignments and managing a caseload. To support Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) with all aspects of investigations, case/trial preparation.

Under the direct supervision of the Director and Deputy Director of Professional Staff of the Investigations Division, specific duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

Assist with training TPAs to function within their bureau's requirements.

Oversee duties and responsibilities of TPAs.

Maintain a reduced caseload.

Communicate with Director and Deputy Director as to the productivity of professional staff on a regular basis.

Communicate with and acquire documents from other agencies, such as NYPD, DOC, ACS, OCME, and hospitals or wherever

documents are located.

Compile, analyze, reproduce case documents and ensure proper redaction of documentation.

Draft legal documents such as motion responses, legal memorandum, search warrants, subpoenas, and Orders to Produce.

Preparation of discovery for defense attorneys.

Perform legal research.

Engage in witness contact and communication.

Secure, listen to, and transcribe phone calls from the Department of Correction.

Perform all bureau related duties as needed or assigned, including but not limited to drafting or typing of correspondence and

confidential documents, updating computer-based tracking systems, record keeping, filing, and document preparation.

All other duties as assigned.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

A baccalaureate degree preferred or a high school diploma with four (4) years of work experience in a law firm, governmental agency, civic or community organization.

Minimum 1 years as a TPA 1 or comparable paralegal experience.

A valid New York State driver's license with a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience is required and must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Exceptional organizational skills and strong attention to detail

Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

Proficient in Microsoft Office particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook

Discretion and integrity to work on highly confidential investigations.

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Familiarity with general court services and function.

Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or

High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or

Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
