About DNR's Central Dispatch Center:

The Central Dispatch Center is located at Paynetown State Recreation Area near Bloomington. IN. Central Dispatch maintains radio contact with Conservation Officers across the state and provides the means for the public, law enforcement agencies, and DNR properties to gain immediate assistance and response. Central Dispatch also manages calls to report poaching and pollution in state parks, recreation, and gaming areas.

Role Overview:

Dispatchers are public safety professionals with the primary responsibility of performing work related to the education and protection of Indiana's natural resources by providing communications and dispatching services. Just as importantly, the DNR Central Dispatch Center is the first point of contact for most members of the public who have questions or concerns covering a wide variety of natural resource matters. Knowledge and understanding of DNR-related rules, regulations, and policies are essential. A summer intern will be expected to answer public inquiries in a calm and professional manner and refer calls that they are not knowledgeable about to a full-time communications specialist.

The selected candidate must be flexible and able to change their schedule on short notice to cover shift vacancies left by full-time employees on leave.

Salary Statement:

The pay for this internship starts at an hourly rate of $15.00.

A Day in the Life:

Answer incoming telephone communication lines and acquire pertinent information for dispatching department personnel.

Operate a Computer Aided Dispatch System (CAD).

Maintains the current status of all conservation officers and other DNR employees who utilize the Dispatch Center for Communication purposes.

Performs routine computer/data system maintenance.

Relay information and messages via electronic communications media.

Answers administrative telephone calls and responds to requests for information or assistance.

Maintains a current IDACS/NCIC file for all information obtained through the use of the NCIC System.

Monitor severe weather and notify officers and DNR properties when required.

Technical knowledge, manual dexterity, and well-developed oral communication skills are necessary to be successful in this position.

Performs other work as required.

Dispatch appropriate personnel to DNR-related calls including critical incidents in which life and property may be at risk.

Manage radio communications under the tutelage of a senior communications specialist.

The position of dispatcher requires mental concentration, intense at times, performed in a sometimes-high-stress environment.

What You'll Need for Success:

Must have at least one year of college in a natural resources-related course of study.

Must be familiar and competent with a computer and associated programs.

The selected intern must:

Be calm and even-tempered

Be decisive.

Be able to process incomplete information, assess the needs, and provide a response.

Have exceptional speaking/listening skills.

Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Know and understand the communications system with which he/she works.

Understand the rules and regulations which affect his/her job.

Be able to learn and understand a wide array of natural resource-related information including hunting, fishing, trapping, boating, ATV, and property laws as well as wild animal behavior and habits

Maintain professional contact and relationships with other emergency response agencies.

Maintain professional contact and relationships with other DNR divisions and DNR volunteers such as wildlife rehabilitators, nuisance animal control operators, and hunter-education volunteers. These are only a few examples of many important relationships.
