Program Overview:
The Sallie Mae Internship program seeks to attract and develop exceptional early talent while adding value to our organization. Our goal is to tie academic learning into a practical business setting while fostering professional and personal growth within a student's area of focus.
Over the course of the summer, interns will gain exposure to senior leaders, attend meetings, work alongside mentors, and receive valuable performance feedback.
What You'll Contribute:
The Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) Summer Intern will support strategic initiatives within the Chief Data Office (CDO) focused on managing data across its lifecycle-from creation and usage to archival and secure disposal. This role involves various @types of analysis, data mining, and data visualization, to gain insights from data sets collaborating with colleagues, including data analysts, data scientists, and business stakeholders. This role offers a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of data governance, architecture, and AI enablement, while contributing to enterprise-wide efforts that drive data usage, consumption, compliance, and business value.
Interns will gain hands-on experience with frameworks and tools that support data lake ingestion, digital journey mapping, data classification, and readiness for AI technologies. This may include working with data analysis tools, programming languages (e.g., Python, R), database systems, and data visualization tools. Presenting the results of analysis in a clear and understandable way is important. Data analysis is a dynamic field, and as an intern, you'll have the opportunity to learn and grow.
What You'll Do:
Data Classification & Inventory: Assist in requirements gathering to identifying, tagging, and categorizing data assets across platforms to support lifecycle management and governance.
Usage & Consumption Analysis: Analyze usage patterns (Snowflake, SAS, visualization tools etc.,) to inform lifecycle management decisions and AI readiness.
Process Optimization: Evaluate workflows and build improvements or automation opportunities.
Records Management Support: Help assess retention schedules and automate process to update and monitor schedule and purge process.
Technical Analysis & Reporting: Use tools such as SQL, Python, Power BI to support data tracking, reporting, and visualization.
AI Enablement Support: Contribute to foundational AI initiatives through data discovery, classification and governance requirements.
Effective Communication: Presenting your findings and recommendations is a critical aspect of the role. Clarity and the ability to translate technical insights into actionable business recommendations are vital.
Adaptability: The role may involve a variety of tasks and projects. Being adaptable and open to working on different @types of analyses or projects, as assigned by your supervisor, is important. It demonstrates your flexibility and willingness to learn.

What You Have:
Minimum education, skills and experience required.
Currently enrolled in an accredited university pursuing a degree in Business Information Systems, Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, or related technical field
Open to graduate level students with expected graduation dates of Dec 2026 - May 2027
Availability:
This is a 12 week paid internship and expectations for a 40 hour work week for the following dates 6/8/2026 - 8/28/2026.
We follow a 3 day flexible in office policy in our Newark, DE office
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Previous internship experience in technology or data management role preferred.
