Responsibilities As a Facility Operations Specialist, GS-1640-12 with the National Park Service (NPS), your duties will include, but are not limited to: Conduct research, archival review, and onsite assessments to determine the original condition, construction methods, and architectural characteristics of historic structures. Develop detailed restoration and rehabilitation plans, including drawings, specifications, work sequences, and technical instructions that guide preservation and repair activities. Identify and evaluate period-appropriate tools, materials, hardware, and construction techniques needed to ensure new work is consistent with historic fabric and visually compatible with cultural resource standards. Monitor and document project execution, ensuring work complies with approved preservation plans, building codes, and agency standards; review and approve contractor work, track progress, and oversee project budgets. Provide technical guidance and hands-on instruction to craftspeople and maintenance personnel on specialized preservation techniques, historic-period hardware systems, and appropriate repair methods for sensitive materials. Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing, or recurring and considerable walking, stooping, bending, crouching, and climbing such as in performing regular and periodic construction activities, field inspections, or to observe and study work operations in an industrial, storage, or comparable work area. Some light lifting of items such as books, instruments, and other similar materials may be required. Depending on project assignments, the work may require periodic to frequent travel of up to five continuous working days and driving a motor vehicle long distance to reach remote parks. Working Conditions: The work is usually performed in an office setting. The work area normally involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring safety precautions typical of offices or meeting and training rooms; or may involve occasional exposure to conditions in production facilities, laboratories, or construction sites requiring normal safety precautions. Participation in safety training such as fall protection, respiratory mask fit testing, or confined space entry training, as required by individual projects may be required to allow safe and thorough assessment of existing facilities and/or new construction. Incidental Driving: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Minimum Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. Qualifications All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-03/09/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as conducting research on historic structures to provide input into preservation/restoration plans; preparing drawings or reports to document the condition of historic structures; and applying established techniques to preserve or restore historic materials. You must include hours per week worked. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
