The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM)is currently recruiting aDirector, Industry Partnerships.The Director, Industry Partnerships will pursue, manage, and maintain research partnerships between the University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) faculty and industry sponsors. UMB has robust basic, translational, and clinical research portfolios, as well as clinical informatics capabilities, and a cadre of well-established corporate partnerships. The incumbent will build on these existing relationships and establish new partnerships to increase corporate funding broadly at UMB. Partnerships will center on basic and translational science, clinical trials, and biomedical informatics. Incumbent will familiarize him/herself with the relevant research activities across UMB, engage companies with aligned priorities, guide faculty in shaping value propositions for industry partners, coordinate responses to requests for proposals from industry sponsors, and attend meetings and conferences to promote the work of UMB scientists with potential sponsors. The Director, Industry Partnerships will partner with faculty researchers to tailor proposals to industry priorities while meeting academic goals, and usher proposals and research agreements through appropriate administrative channels. Duties will include coordination with research administrators, licensing managers, and contracting officers, as well as research on pharma and biotech R&D priorities, maintenance of customer relationship management database, attendance at networking events, contributing to mid- and long-term plans to meet strategic objectives of UMB, and some travel (1-2X/year). The Director, Industry Partnerships may remain involved in research projects in a high-level project management capacity if necessary to ensure contractual deliverables are met and will work to maintain and build upon sponsor relationships to facilitate repeat engagements. The incumbent will be based primarily at the UMB campus in Baltimore but may be required to travel occasionally to the UM Institute for Health Computing in North Bethesda and other nearby research sites; some remote work will be permitted. The Director, Industry Partnerships will work on a small peer team and report to the Assistant Dean for Business and Economic Development. The position requires a collaborative spirit, self-motivated initiative, and a desire to promote promising science while achieving revenue and engagement targets. The ability to accurately and effectively represent faculty research and define value propositions for both academic and industry stakeholders, is paramount. Primary Duties: Develop and maintain broad and deep external partner relations on a global scale by being knowledgeable of each corporate partners' missions, markets, and business challenges, to identify collaborative opportunities. Coordinate constant engagement with partners and internal resources, such as faculty members. Define, forecast, develop, and monitor partner performance goals and objectives to ensure the collaboration continuously generates enthusiasm and commitment from both parties. For select projects, execute project management processes and methodologies to ensure projects are delivered on-time, within the budget, adhere to high quality standards, and benefit UMB's research team objectives. Provide high-level project management to ensure projects advance at an appropriate pace, with well-aligned priorities, to build institutional appeal as a potential research partner. Serve as departments' "Research Navigator" identifying institutional resources and potential industry partnerships to advance Research and maintain a catalogue of companies' research/pipeline priorities to better identify potential sponsor relationships and corporate partnerships. Pursue partnerships through proactive outreach to appropriate research/innovation teams within companies that have been identified as promising potential partners. Promote a portfolio of institutional research capabilities and resources to potential sponsors. Work with faculty to convey value of corporate partnership and shape their work for industry-friendly value propositions. Manage and maintain corporate research alliances. Perform day-to-day administration of research alliance collaborations, including maintaining internal and external stakeholder relationships, navigating administrative processes, and monitoring projects for compliance with milestones. Coordinate responses to industry Request for Proposals (RFPs). Attend networking events to meet internal and external stakeholders and promote the work of institutional researchers. Collaborate closely with tech transfer and philanthropy teams to ensure a consistent, positive, and coordinated approach to common industry partners. Perform other duties as assigned. Education:Master's degree in biomedical science discipline required. PhD in related field of study is strongly preferred. Experience:Five (5) years' experience in business development, partnership management, or biomedical research fields. Project management experience preferred. Supervisory Experience:N/A Certification/Licensure:Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred. Other:Annual financial disclosure required by Maryland State Law. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: A well-qualified candidate should have an understanding of scientific research and have experience navigating a large academic research institution. Experience working with the pharma and/or biotech industries strongly preferred. Experience working with a major health system is a plus. Successful candidates will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to accurately represent the work of academic scientists. Ability to work well and present oneself professionally with internal and external stakeholders is essential. Must be able to manage several relationships and projects simultaneously, meet deadlines consistently, and navigate all levels of the academic and health care settings. Excellent communication and networking skills are essential, as is proven ability to work successfully with administrators, faculty, physicians, and staff.
