Summary The VA St. Louis Health Care System is recruiting for Full-time Diagnostic Radiologist located within Diagnostic Imaging Service at our John Cochran Division. The St. Louis VA Health Care System provides cutting-edge surgical and procedural care to veterans. Responsibilities The diagnostic radiologist is responsible for diagnostic imaging functions within VASTLHCS and is accountable for ensuring quality and cost-effective care. In this capacity, the incumbent has responsibility for the effective and efficient management of Imaging programs and services performed within the VASTLHCS; either by inhouse activities or by community partners. The diagnostic radiologist ensures timely delivery of quality assessment, diagnosis, and management of inpatient, residential, and outpatient care in accordance with VHA and Health Care System standards. Specially trained, physician, who utilizes diagnostic imaging staff and equipment to assist the referring physician in the diagnose of and treatment of medical conditions. Reviews imaging orders and consults. Obtains patient histories from electronic medical records, patient interviews, dictated reports, or by communicating with referring physicians. Determines the appropriate diagnostic imaging modality and protocols. Communicates with specialized imaging staff of the selected protocols and provides various levels of supervision based on the individual's qualifications and scope of practice. Serves as a subject matter expert on imaging examinations and procedures for referring physicians. Makes recommendations in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions based on their extensive knowledge of medicine. Follows professional industry standards while protocoling examinations, prescribing contrast, medication, and radiation doses. Recognize or treat complications during and after procedures, including blood pressure problems, pain, over sedation, bleeding, or adverse reactions. Participates in quality improvement activities including discussions of areas where risk of error is high or in areas of low productivity because of an ineffective process. Participates continuing education activities to maintain and develop expertise. Educates imaging staff new processes, examinations, techniques, or procedures learned. Accepts poor imaging quality and techniques sparingly. Identifies and reports poor image quality or performance using appropriate control channels. Active participation of the radiation safety program. Adheres to ALARA principles. Administers radiation with occupational, patient, and public safety in mind. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. The Physical requirements of this position include the following tasks which may be performed intermittently: lifting of up to 10 lbs., sitting (4 hours), standing (2 hours), walking (2 hours), bending/stooping (1 hour), twisting (1/2 hour), simple grasping (4 hours), fine manipulation (6 hours), reaching above the shoulder (1/2 hour), and operating machinery (1/2 hour). Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.
