Position Summary

Summer is quickly approaching and the City of Bozeman is looking to hire two Short-Term Workers to assist our Engineering Inspectors during the peak construction season. No prior experience is required, making this an excellent opportunity to gain experience learning and working in the contruction field.

This is a 40-hour/week position, and the schedule is Monday-Friday from 8am to 5pm with an hour lunch. Ideally, this position will start on May 26th and end on August 21st, with some flexibility on either side depending on availability.

Fair Labor Standards Act Status: Non-Exempt

Length of Season: Ideally May 26 - August 21, 2026.

Assignment Details: Not to exceed 90 working days or 520 hours, whichever comes first.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Reads and understands construction drawings and specifications.

Performs inspections of City construction and improvement projects by visiting and documenting construction sites.

Utilizes City vehicles for transportation to and from construction sites.

Prepares daily reports of construction materials, progress, means and methods using photos and writing

Reports and documents any non-compliance issues to the project engineer.

Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.

Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.

Performs other directly related duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

At least one year of formal training or education beyond high school in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Construction Management, or a closely related field is required.

Some related experience in utilities or public works is preferred, but not required.

Must be of legal age to perform the duties of the position (at least 18 years old).

Must possess a valid Class D driver's license.

Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory responses to appropriate post conditional offer process.

Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.

Ability to exercise self-awareness and awareness of surroundings while present on busy jobsites.

Ability to work well with supervisors, coworkers, professional partners, and the public.

Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks.

Ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

Consistently performs assignments in accordance with the City's Core Values of Integrity, Leadership, Service and Teamwork.
