Job Title Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) Program Lead Instructor - West Burlington
Job Description
The Adult Education and Literacy Lead Instructor is responsible for providing competency-based instruction and programing to help adult learners develop the skills necessary for employment, training, and/or post-secondary education. The Lead Teacher will provide structured course plans; identify and develop curriculum; conduct student orientations, and coordinate testing and data management. Additionally, this position will spend a portion of their time providing leadership and training to other AEL instructors, such as but not limited to, best practices and strategies in instruction, technology, classroom management, and student documentation processes.
This position is assigned to the West Burlington campus.
Start date is negotiable, but the successful candidate must be available to start no later than July 1, 2026.
The Adult Education and Literacy ( AEL ) Program Lead Instructor will abide by the employment contract and relevant policies and guidelines of the Board of Trustees.
This position is a full-time position (261-day contract); with an annual starting salary of $45,760.00. Benefits include medical, dental & vision insurance, $50,000 life insurance, long-term disability, paid sick leave, paid discretionary time, paid spring and holiday breaks, 15 days' vacation and participation in IPERS or TIAA retirement plan.
Employment is contingent on state and/or federal funding for adult education.
Essential Duties Summary
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Commitment to the comprehensive community college philosophy.
Comply with relevant program, institutional, state and federal policies, guidelines, and procedures.
Provide leadership and/or oversight, as assigned, for particular program area(s), e.g., literacy; ESL ; HSED ; distance learning; student transitions to training, college or employment; @contextualized instruction; etc.
Develop and facilitate AEL classes, including assessment, data management, and documentation of student participation and progress at assigned site(s) and in accordance with relevant program, institutional, state and federal policies.
Prepare lesson plans that provide all students an opportunity to learn and provide instruction as assigned.
Monitor student progress toward improving academic, life, and work skills, which may include facilitating high school equivalency diploma preparation and/or English language acquisition.
Conduct student intake, assess student learning, and accurately document program services.
Actively participate in team meetings and complete a minimum of 12 hours of professional development each fiscal year.
Assist the Director of AEL in identifying and recommending potential instructors, and the orientation and training of new instructors.
Contribute to the expansion and implementation of the AEL program, including but not limited to curriculum development, professional development, and collaboration with internal and external partners.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree
Experience teaching in a formal setting.
Ability to use technology and computer software applications to perform work duties.
Experience that demonstrates sensitivity to and an understanding of adult learners with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic, and individual ability differences.
Strong human relations and interpersonal oral and written communication skills emphasizing positive interactions.
Ability to handle confidential matters with discretion and perform with a high level of personal and professional integrity.
Self-motivated, creative, and capable of being flexible in the delivery of program services.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in education or adult education.
Current Iowa Department of Education standard teaching license.
Experience teaching literacy levels in reading and/or math in K-12 or Adult Education and Literacy education systems, including ESL or high school equivalency diploma ( HSED ) preparation.
Physical Demands
The Adult Education and Literacy ( AEL ) Program Lead Instructor must have the ability and mobility to serve a rural service area; travel to other areas within and outside of the college's region will be required. Must be able to work on a basis of "available as work demands" in addition to a fixed schedule, which will include evenings and some weekends. In addition, the individual in this position will actively promote a positive image for the college district.
