Job Description
The incumbent in this position performs skilled management care for one-third of the 303 acres of grounds and all shrub, tree, and other plant pruning and trimming on the campus of Minnesota State University, Mankato.
This position has been designated as weather and emergency essential. In the event of a short-term University closure or emergency event, incumbent is required to report to work and respond as requested. *Please note that this seasonal position will work ten (10) months out of the calendar year with a two (2) month seasonal layoff period. There is a possibility of snow removal work during the seasonal layoff.
Minimum Qualifications
Ability to train and direct the work of less experienced groundskeepers or work crews sufficient to assign responsibilities and inspect finished work.
Ability to read, interpret and follow oral and written instructions sufficient to independently complete assignments timely using accepted practices and safe techniques.
Knowledge of horticulture techniques and practices (planting schedules, germination intervals, and transplantation procedures) sufficient to maintain and improve facility grounds/landscape and recognize and/or treat plant diseases and pests.
Grounds-keeping experience on a multiple building complex including the care of lawns and woody and herbaceous plants using accepted horticultural practices.
Experience with the safe use of and simple repair of hand-held tools, riding machinery (all @types of lawn and landscape equipment), and snow removal equipment (hand and heavier equipment).
Basic knowledge of chemical fertilizer or pesticide application and related safety practices.
Preferred Qualification
Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
Experience operating various equipment including but not limited to, mowers, turf aerators, over seeders and field sweepers, sufficient to mow, trim, edge, rake, fertilize, sod or seed lawns and athletic fields and provide overall care and maintenance of lawns.
Ability to identify various plant species sufficient to diagnose potential diseases and resolve problems with generally accepted practices.
Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience operating heavy equipment in snow removal operations.
Experience in operating and maintaining commercial-grade sprinkler systems.
Experience working in the absence of a supervisor being on duty.
Experience laying out collegiate and professional football and baseball fields, track and field surfaces, and intramural sports fields.
Ability to perform light to moderate repairs to equipment and welding projects.
Possession of a Minnesota Department of Agriculture pesticide applicator's license.
Degree in Horticulture, Forestry, or related field.

Physical Requirements:
a. Ability to lift and move from 40 to 80 lbs.
b. Ability to work at heights in a boom-truck or aerial boom lift machine.
c. Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
d. Ability to frequently bend, twist, reach (at, above, and below shoulder level), push/pull, sit, stand, use hand and foot controls, and handle a quiet to very loud noise intensity level while performing the duties outlined above.
