Overview

Centralized Intake and Emergency Services (CIES) operates Vermonts statewide child protection hotline 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. CIES is the first point of contact for reports of child abuse or neglect and manages after-hours emergencies involving children in state custody, youth justice matters, and situations where a childs behavior is beyond the control of their caregiver.

This position will answer the child protection hotline and gather detailed information from callers reporting concerns about child abuse or neglect. The position document reports in the states reporting system and help coordinate after-hours emergency responses. This includes supporting Family Services Workers in the field, coordinating foster care or other placements for children in DCF custody, and providing phone support to foster parents.

The CIES Family Services Worker will also work closely with law enforcement by sharing guidance on child protection and youth justice laws, policies, and procedures, and connect callers and families with appropriate community resources and referrals. While the position works under the supervision of an administrative manager, the role requires sound judgment and the ability to make decisions independently in time-sensitive situations.

This position includes a rotating schedule with one regular weekend shift, at least one evening shift (up to midnight), and some regular business-hour shifts. Specific schedules will be discussed during the interview process. Availability to work some holidays is required, and standby/on-call duty may be assigned as needed.

Most work is performed in an office setting, with minimal travel required. All employees of the Agency of Human Services are expected to carry out their work using a customer-focused, strengths-based, and results-oriented approach.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed in an office setting and minimal travel is required. Incumbents must have a private means of transportation to the office. CIES is an essential service that functions twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. Incumbents are expected to work a specific shift schedule that may include one weekend shift and/or evening shifts and some holidays.

Incumbents predictably encounter high levels of stress, strong differences of opinion, and potentially exposure to threats of harm. Class incumbents may be required to be on standby status to answer the hotline during night, weekend, and holiday hours.
