Summary This position is located within the VA New Jersey Health Care System (VA NJHCS), under the responsibility of the Electric Shop within the Maintenance & Repair (M&R) Section of Facilities Management Service (FMS) located in Lyons, NJ. The work involves fabricating, overhauling, modifying, installing, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining non-medical equipment located throughout the medical centers, primarily consisting of safety, security and communication systems. Responsibilities Additional duties include but not limited to: Troubleshoots and repairs defective electronic systems and equipment including intercom systems, nurse call systems, panic alarms, security alarm systems and fire alarm systems - also works on televisions, satellite systems, VCR's and CCTV's; Works from manufacturer's specifications, schematics, block diagrams, and technical orders; Determines the operation of circuits, locates the points from which to take readings, analyzes schematic layout and makes preliminary visual inspections and operational tests to determine components causing malfunctions or invalid readings; Makes repairs by replacing damaged, missing, burnt or faulty items; Sets up and operates computer controlled automatic test equipment to test and troubleshoot various components and assemblies of electronic equipment; Plans work required and sequence of operations to perform work; Prepares labor and material cost estimates on proposed jobs; Fabricates parts or assembly of systems from available parts and orders all electronic parts; Maintains shop records on inventory, equipment repairs, purchases, etc.; Updates computer database with regard to work orders, inventory, repair histories and vendors; Ensures ongoing preventive maintenance program; Assists and/or installs fire alarms; and, Performs all other duties as assigned. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the following requirements. Screen Out Element: You must have the ability to do the work of a Journeymen level Electronics Mechanic, WG-10, without more than normal supervision. This includes experience utilizing diagnostic techniques for electronic equipment and networked systems; applying problem solving techniques to resolve difficulties with equipment/systems; inspecting, maintaining, installing and repairing various systems (i.e. cable TV, fire alarms, PA systems, nurse call, etc.); and communicating and explaining work practices. Please note, your experience and job responsibilities must be detailed in your resume to receive credit AND PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The work frequently requires lifting and carrying items weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally must lift objects up to 50 pounds with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. The work requires frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping in a variety of cramped and awkward positions. Climbing and working in high places may be required. Some work may require the aid of magnifying lenses, eye loops, and microscopes to accomplish repairs on miniature components.
