The Quality Engineer will be part of the Institutional Quality and Performance Assurance-Quality Support Services (IQPA-QSS) Group and will report to the IQPA-QSS Project Execution Team Leader and Group Leader. The IQPA-QSS mission is to support Institutional Programs and Projects to ensure quality requirements are implemented and compliant. The selected candidate will report directly to the IQPA-QSS Group. The Quality Engineer will be deployed functionally to and programmatically to the Hydrotesting and Sub-critical Experiments Programs. Day-to-day assignments will be provided by the Dynamic Structure Design and Engineering Group (J-2) Group.
As the Quality Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring quality requirements are incorporated into the Organization mentioned. Regular contact with other resources internal and external to the IQPA-QSS Group may be necessary to execute responsibilities successfully.
The position requires an experienced professional with a full understanding of specialized areas and a working to advanced knowledge of quality programs, along with being able to resolve a wide range of issues in creative ways. The candidate will participate in nonconformance reporting, closures, and the corrective action processes, and will network with quality professionals in their own area of expertise. The candidate works under limited direction while receiving general instructions on new assignments. All work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met, while demonstrating good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
This position will be filled at the Quality Engineer 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Typical responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Review and prepare procurement documentation germane to quality assurance, quality engineering, and quality control requirements.
Participate in the development, implementation, and evaluation of processes, procedures, and applications contributing to the overall objective of sustaining an effective engineering, procurement, and program Quality Management System.
Serve as the primary Point of Contact in nonconformance reporting and corrective action processes.
Potentially lead, coordinate, and/or conduct audits and surveillances of quality-affecting engineering, procurement, construction, and ancillary project work.
Perform extensive Supplier Quality and Source Verification Activities with travel to multiple vendors (domestic and foreign) for LANL hold and witness points.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Quality Engineer 2 ($94,500 - $154,600)
Working knowledge and application of nuclear codes and standards. For example: 10 CFR 830 Subpart A, DOE Order 414.1D, national consensus standard ASME NQA-1-2008/ASME NQA-1a-2009 Addenda to ASME NQA-1 - 2008, and U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulatory Guide Series or equivalent.
Working technical knowledge of the application of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code for the procurement, fabrication, inspection, testing and In-Service inspection & evaluation of Pressure Vessels and Piping.
Working experience participating in and supporting quality assessments, surveillances, audits and/or Non-Conformance disposition and closure.
Working ability to understand and interpret various physical, mechanical, and electrical documents, blueprints, drawings, specifications, and schematics.
Working ability to effectively communicate with all levels of personnel across multiple organizations to solve complex problems.
Working knowledge application and sufficient experience to comprehend specified requirements for these disciplines; including Welding, Nondestructive Testing, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance and various Mechanical and Material Testing methods and applications.
Working level technical knowledge of the application of engineering, procurement, and construction practices sufficient to comprehend specified requirements for these disciplines; including Commercial Grade Dedication (CGD) and application of the graded approach in an NQA-1 environment.
Certified Welding Inspector - American Welding Society (AWS-CWI)
Current certification or previous certifications in three or more of the following NDE Level II Inspection (RT, UT, MT, PT, VT), Piping or Pressure Vessel Inspection, Mechanical Inspections.
Quality Engineer 3 ($104,100 - $172,200)
In addition to what was outlined above for QE 2, this level would require:

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, QE / Quality Assurance (QA), or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 5 year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, QE or Industrial Systems Engineering or a related field and 8 year of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Advanced level experience and ability to ensure quality assurance requirements are met during the design, bid, build, and start-up of nuclear, non-nuclear, high-, moderate, and low-hazard facilities and process equipment.
Currently or previously auditor training or certification from a recognized professional organization and/or auditor qualification from a previous employer.
Experience as an M&O contractor for the Department of Energy (DOE).

Work Location: The work location for this position is telework and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
