THE POSITION
The Department of Environmental Protection is actively looking to hire an Air Quality Specialist Trainee to join their team. This role offers a robust 12-month training program aimed at developing the essential skills required for a successful career as an Air Quality Specialist. This pivotal role involves a range of responsibilities, including conducting thorough inspections, investigating public complaints, and developing comprehensive emission inventories (AIMS) within a designated geographical area. A key aspect of this position is the assessment of compliance with relevant environmental regulations, which is essential for the effective implementation of the Clean Air Act. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
The primary responsibilities associated with this role encompass monitoring, compliance, and enforcement activities related to air quality management. This includes executing tasks for facilities as designated by the Air Quality District Supervisor (AQDS), ensuring that any existing or potential air pollution issues are thoroughly assessed, addressed, and resolved in alignment with the Bureau's air pollution control program and the Department's established Rules and Regulations. Additionally, the position involves the collection and entry of emission inventory data for the AIMS system pertaining to the assigned facilities. Regular inspections of control equipment and air pollution sources are conducted to verify adherence to permit conditions and Department regulations. Furthermore, the role requires oversight of source tests performed by external consultants or the Bureau's Division of Source Testing and Monitoring. Based on the findings, the position entails recommending necessary actions to ensure compliance and utilizing all available mechanisms to facilitate prompt adherence to regulatory standards. The incumbent will perform these duties either with an Air Quality Specialist or the Air Quality District Supervisor. The work products produced; i.e., memos, reports, letters, etc. are reviewed by the supervisor before being issued or released.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
Full-time employment
Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Norristown. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
Four years of technical experience in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
A bachelor's degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, environmental health, geology, biology, ecology, or a closely related field; or
An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Special Requirement:
This position requires possession of an active motor vehicle license.
