POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:
Full-time, First-shift;
Rotating 24/48 hour schedules;
Out-of-state travel may be required for training. Valid Driver's license required;

We are a unique dual-status agency, having both federal and state missions. The CTMD'S primary public responsibilities are:
(1) To support the CT National Guard enabling the National Guard to provide ready units for Federal or State requirements;
(2) To train, resource and coordinate state emergency response assets, and;
(3) To plan for and protect citizens and their property in times of war, terrorism, invasion, rebellion, riot or disaster.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Connecticut Airport Authority, Bradley International Airport and other state airports and at the Military Department, Connecticut Air National Guard Base this class is accountable for the supervision of a shift of Airport Crash Rescue Firefighters engaged in fire prevention, firefighting and crash rescue operations and the provision of emergency medical and crisis response services.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Supervises assigned staff including initiation, training, counseling and evaluation in accordance with department standards;
Assigns duties and reviews results for accuracy, effectiveness and conformance with policy;
Studies, analyzes and evaluates tasks performed by shift;
Ensures appropriate records and reports completed in an accurate and timely manner and in compliance with national standards;
Provides educational instruction and training to firefighting and non-firefighting departmental personnel, other agency personnel and individuals;
Ensures educational and training requirements are completed in the appropriate timeframe;
Assigns, reviews and participates in fire prevention inspections and investigations;
Reports defective or hazardous conditions and equipment and conducts re-inspections to insure correction of deficiencies;
Oversees daily maintenance of station, fire, medical and/or ambulance equipment;
Acts as Incident Commander and supervises personnel on scene of fire, emergency, hazardous material and medical responses including formulation of strategy and tactics for effective incident mitigation;
Supervises removal of equipment, supplies, documents and other items from burning structures or aircraft and preserves evidence necessary to determine cause of fire or crash;
Maintain records and submits pertinent reports;
Operates fire alarm communications and ascertains pertinent data concerning fires and other incidents;
May be in charge of a total fire services program at branch facilities;
Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of
firefighting and crash rescue practices and procedures as applied to airports and aircraft crash situations;
fire investigation, inspection and prevention methodology and procedures;
and ability to utilize and implement Incident Command System in accordance with the National Incident Management System (NIMS);
fire safety and building codes;
Knowledge of
emergency medical services techniques;
hazardous materials methodology;
training practices and procedures;
Considerable
interpersonal skills;
oral and written communication skills;
Considerable ability to
evaluate emergency situations and develop effective course of action;
work under pressure;
Ability to utilize computer software;
Supervisory ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience as a Firefighter in an organized fire department or a state firefighting service.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been at the level of Fire Lieutenant or higher in an organized fire department.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants with the following E & T:
Fire Inspector I (IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited)
Fire Inspector I (IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited)
Fire Officer II (IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited)
HazMat Incident Commander (IFSAC and/or Pro Board accredited)
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must possess and retain National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Officer 2 certification.
Incumbents in this class must maintain membership in the Connecticut Air National Guard for at least six (6) years which may be in the Airport Crash Rescue Firefighter class, a combination of time while served in the Airport Crash Rescue Firefighter and Airport Crash Rescue Fire Lieutenant class or, from the time of new hire into the Airport Crash Rescue Fire Captain class. Incumbents may be required to attend the Air Force Firefighting School within six (6) months of hire.
Incumbents in this class will be required to possess and retain a Department of Defense security clearance.
Incumbents in this class will be required to complete required training in accordance with the Department of Defense.
Instruction 6055.6-M within one (1) year of appointment to the classification.
Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license with proper endorsements and a valid Military Operator's license.
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and a retain Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate or Paramedic license.
Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain Office of State Fire Marshal, Fire Inspector certification.
CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate will be made before persons are certified for appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to a moderate amount of lifting equipment, danger of injury or loss of life during firefighting and crash rescue operations and handling of hazardous materials, significant mental stress in responding to life and death emergencies and to strongly disagreeable conditions including exposure to weather, loud noises and hazardous materials.
