Summary:

To supervise crews performing construction, and maintenance of buildings and related structures at state correctional facilities; perform related work.

Examples of Duties:

Administrative:

Typical responsibilities: reviews construction project plans and blueprints; consults with project engineers, supervisors and others to identify problems with proposed projects; develops crew work schedules; performs on-site inspections of projects and repairs to evaluate progress and quality of work performed; oversees construction, remodeling, repairs and maintenance typical to correctional facilities such as painting, mechanical systems, concrete, electronics, locking systems, wastewater, plumbing, and heavy equipment.

Construction and repair:

Typical responsibilities: supervises and performs construction, repair, and remodeling of structures, walls, ceilings, floors, and partitions; interprets blueprints and makes preliminary drawings, drafts, or designs of structures; participates in surveys; determines construction material and replacement parts; orders supplies and equipment; installs doors, windows, room dividers, panels, siding, and tile; lays and repairs concrete floors, sidewalks, walls, and other structures; installs and repairs fencing; applies paints and lacquers uses and repairs small hand and power tools; operates and performs minor preventive maintenance on trucks, dozers, graders, backhoes, loaders, cement mixers, and welders; performs road maintenance and snow removal. Typical responsibilities: makes recommendations regarding hiring of trades staff; supervises crews representing multiple trades in completion of assigned projects and tasks; trains, monitors, directs, and evaluates performance of tradesmen and inmate workers; ensures workers use tools and equipment in a proper and safe manner; maintains custody of inmates while on work projects; conducts searches for weapons, tools, and contraband.

Minimum Qualifications

Some knowledge of supervisory practices. Experience: constructing, remodeling, and maintaining buildings and related structures; reading and interpreting blueprints and construction specifications; using hand and power tools commonly used in the construction trade; operating heavy equipment; performing maintenance on construction vehicles and equipment. Valid driver's license.
