Summary The Health Technician position performs all duties under the direction of the RN and is assigned clinical and non-clinical duties within Patient Care Services at the Wilmington VA Medical Center in Wilmington, DE Responsibilities THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION Duties: Takes vital signs after completion of orientation and competency validation. Performs venipuncture, blood cultures, including handling and delivering specimens to lab. Recognizes signs of cardiac and/or respiratory arrest. Recognizes signs and symptoms of distress in patients and takes immediate and appropriate action. Screens, directs, and prioritizes all telephone calls in the ICU Department. Assists patients with eating, walking, and spending time with anxious but medically stable patients as directed. Escorts/transports patients on litters or wheelchair to variety of Hospital areas if needed. Uses appropriate lifting/moving/transfer techniques/devises. Performs other duties as assigned. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITON: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Qualifications ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. PLUS SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that requires application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes taking vital signs, performing venipuncture, blood culture, performing 12-lead ECG and rhythm strips, work closely with medical staff, ICU nurse manager, screens and directs call in ICU department, assist patients with eating, walking, etc. uses appropriate lifting/moving/transfer techniques/devises, obtain and stock clerical and clinical supplies and forms for unit, and submit work orders. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Possess successfully completed six (6) months of graduate education in a field of study directly related to the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
