Position Overview

The Accelerator Technologist II - Mechanical works under general supervision to perform mechanical assembly, fabrication, and field installation tasks of basic to intermediate complexity. The role may also support machining, welding, sheet-metal work, metal finishing, machine maintenance, vacuum assembly, and field operations as needed. Work must adhere to all safety requirements and Work Planning and Control (WPC) protocols.

This position involves completing stand-alone assignments or contributing to larger projects. Typical tasks may include designing fixtures and tooling, installing and testing pumps and motors, brazing and soldering, fabricating simple coils, and disassembling, repairing, and reassembling magnets. Work will take place in radiation-controlled areas.

The Technologist communicates regularly with supervisors regarding progress, priorities, and schedules, and is expected to follow all SLAC safety standards while identifying opportunities for improvement.

Required Qualifications

Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings for assembly, fabrication, and installation of mechanical and vacuum components.

Experience operating cranes, hoists, and forklifts for safely moving large equipment.

Demonstrated skills in repairing, assembling, testing, and installing mechanical components in both shop and field environments, including water and electrical connections and anchoring.

Experience performing hipot and pressure testing on magnets and magnet coils.

Ability to follow detailed procedures and work instructions precisely.

Proficient with manual shop equipment such as drill presses, band saws, belt sanders, and grinders.

Skilled in using precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, height gauges) to verify part specifications.

Experience handling cryogenic liquids and cryogenic systems.

Ability to perform basic plumbing and tube-bending operations.

Competence in selecting and using appropriate hand tools.

Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Strong task-planning, organizing, and communication skills.

Consistent record of meeting quality and schedule requirements while balancing efficiency and accuracy.

Understanding of shop practices and safety requirements.

Ability to recognize when to seek technical or safety assistance and escalate issues through proper management channels.

Valid California driver¿s license with an acceptable driving record for on-site vehicle operation.

Desired Skills

Working knowledge of mathematics.

Experience developing written procedures.

Familiarity with cleanroom practices and protocols.

Basic precision-assembly skills and understanding of UHV (ultra-high vacuum) handling techniques.

Experience transporting and handling cryogenic accelerator cavities.

Ability to perform simple operations using sheet-metal equipment.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Basic machining skills using manual mills and/or lathes.

Classification Title: Accelerator Technologist II Grade: A35 Job code: 6572 Duration: Regular Continuing The expected pay range for this position is $49.88 (Step 1) - $60.28 (Step 10) per hour. Placement in the range is subject to the applicable Collective Bargaining Unit. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position.
