Compensation
Salary: $150,000 - $200,000 annually
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (weekends if available)
Position Summary
The Traction Power Engineer will design and install AC and DC overhead catenary systems, third-rail systems, and automated people mover power systems for electrified railways. This role involves the preparation of technical drawings, specifications, calculations, proposals, cost estimates, and engineering studies. The position requires cross-functional collaboration and a focus on delivering high-quality, constructible designs that meet all project, safety, and regulatory requirements.
Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Lead the development of design documents including single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, SCADA layouts, conduit and cable schedules, substation equipment specifications, grounding, lighting, and duct bank layouts.
Provide guidance to drafters and junior engineers in the preparation of construction documents.
Prepare technical specifications, cost estimates, test plans, field test procedures, and technical studies related to traction power systems.
Perform electrical system studies including load flow, voltage drop, grounding, harmonics, relay protection settings, coordination studies, and arc flash analysis using specialized engineering software.
Ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards including AREMA, NEC (NFPA 70), NESC (IEEE C2), and other relevant U.S. regulations.
Coordinate closely with other system disciplines to develop systemwide duct bank drawings and support CAD efforts for BIM clash detection.
Contribute value engineering input to improve system design efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Perform technical reviews of design deliverables prepared by other team members.
Collaborate with adjacent disciplines such as communications, electrical, structural, mechanical, civil, architectural, and trackwork teams.
Work directly with senior engineers to ensure constructability is considered at all stages of the design process.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
(or equivalent experience/education)
Professional Engineer (PE) License
5+ years of experience in traction power design for transit or rail systems
Strong background in design calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical report writing
Experience leading technical tasks, preparing proposals, and delivering client presentations
Proficient in identifying and managing scope changes and additional work orders
Proficiency in AutoCAD design software
Familiar with CAD software such Bentley/MicroStation, REVIT, SolidWorks, or similar platforms
Familiar with project management and design workflow tools such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Procore
Experience with CTDOT, Metro-North, Amtrak, and MBTA projects
Knowledge of the Amtrak Northeast Corridor in New York City
Familiar with design-build projects
Experience maintaining active train operations during construction
Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team
Highly organized with strong time management capabilities
Physically able to navigate construction sites
(standing, climbing, stooping, crouching)
Willingness to work outdoors and conduct field surveys
Comfortable in all weather conditions and high-noise environments

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Works indoors and outdoors at construction sites
Frequently stands, walks, climbs, balances, stoops, and crouches while negotiating work areas under construction.
Sits, reads, writes, and uses a computer keyboard.
May be exposed to harsh weather conditions including very hot and very cold weather.
May be exposed to loud noise.
Willing to travel.
