Compensation
Salary: $95,000 - $150,000 annually
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (weekends if available)
Position Summary
The Communications Systems Engineer will design, implement, and maintain critical network communications systems for rail-transit infrastructure projects. This role ensures that all systems meet project specifications, industry standards, and safety regulations. The position involves close collaboration with project teams and vendors to deliver reliable, efficient, and compliant communication solutions that support safe and effective rail operations.
Primary/Essential Responsibilities and Duties
Design and review detailed sub-system layouts for rail-transit communications systems, including but not limited to fiber optic and IP backbone networks, radio systems, integrated communications platforms, passenger information systems, CCTV, telephony, SCADA, train control, intrusion detection, access control, and fire alarm systems.
Develop duct bank layouts and coordinate across disciplines for clash detection and BIM integration.
Produce comprehensive design documents such as block diagrams, riser diagrams, network layouts, cable schedules, bills of materials, radio/optical link budgets, and related deliverables.
Generate design reports and author test procedures for system verification, validation, and lifecycle support.
Create Issued-for-Construction (IFC) drawing and document packages.
Support installation, testing & commissioning, system cutovers, and production of record drawings and final reports.
Author technical specifications for procurement, evaluate vendor bids, support vendor selection, and participate in requirements management.
Coordinate with other engineering disciplines (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Structural, etc.) to manage interface design, both physical and functional.
Develop and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs); lead technical engagement with clients, operators, and key stakeholders.
Manage system vendors from design through delivery, including oversight of client training, documentation, and implementation support.
Contribute to cost estimates, project schedules, budgets, and project plan documentation.
Conduct technical peer reviews and mentor junior team members.
Support project pursuit efforts through proposal input and system design strategies.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline
(or equivalent experience/education)
5+ years of experience in rail/transit communications systems design and implementation
Proficiency in AutoCAD design software
Familiar with CAD software such Bentley/MicroStation, REVIT, SolidWorks, or similar platforms
Familiar with design-build projects
Familiarity with North American transit systems and Owner's Engineer project roles
Direct experience designing one or more of the following systems: IP backbone networks, integrated communications systems, telephony, SCADA, track/fence intrusion detection, fire and life safety systems, and passenger information systems
Experience with Interface Management, Testing & Commissioning, Cutover, and Operations & Maintenance phases
Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 130, EN 50121)
Demonstrated ability to lead discussions with clients, stakeholders, and senior project staff
Effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively within a team
Highly organized with strong time management capabilities
Physically able to navigate construction sites
(standing, climbing, stooping, crouching)
Willingness to work outdoors and conduct field surveys
Comfortable in all weather conditions and high-noise environments
