About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):

The Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):

Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

Role Overview:

Incumbent works primarily as a member of the Groundwater Section supporting the implementation of the Groundwater Monitoring Network and supporting the efforts of the Source Water Protection Program. Incumbent will work independently in the field collecting groundwater samples for the presence of contaminents from private and public drinking water wells, and other surveillance efforts, as well as the accompanying office work. Incumbent will have opportunities to be trained in the use of various field logging equipment.

Hourly Rate:

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor's degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor's degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

The incumbent should expect to be involved in a mixture of office and field work activities supporting the sampling and analysis of groundwater supporting the Statewide Groundwater Monitoring Network. Experiences gained during the internship will be directly applicable to a future career in the environmental industry. Intern tasks will include groundwater analytical data management, locational mapping, and field sampling groundwater wells supporting the Indiana Groundwater Monitoring Network. Depending on the intern's background, incumbent could become involved with working with Microsoft Office (Excel and Access) and ESRI's GIS products. Incumbent will be tasked with taking groundwater samples on their own and will be responsible for all accompanying office tasks tasks and paperwork. Incumbent will also provide support for the Drinking Water Capacity Development, Operator Certification and Permits Section by performing critical data entry/tracking and assisting staff with compliance assistance efforts for public water systems.

Job Requirements:

The job could require overnight travel (2-3 nights per week) from June through as long as possible in August or September to accommodate fieldwork necessities. The applicant should be able to read maps and efficiently find remote sampling locations. The incumbent should have a valid Indiana driver's license or the ability to acquire one, since they will be driving to sample locations. The incumbent should have an interest and experience in groundwater and geology. Experience with Microsoft Office (Access and Excel), ESRI ArcGIS experience is desirable, but not required. Knowledge and skill typically acquired through education in natural, physical, biological, public health, environmental science, or engineering are desirable. Ability to effectively interact and orally communicate, with parties with diverse levels of environmental expertise.

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
