Indiana American Water is seeking a motivated, team player who will share our goal of providing safe, healthy, and reliable services to our customers within Muncie and the surrounding areas. As a Utiltiy Specialist, you will ensure the integrity of our field assets including pipelines, water mains, hydrants, meters, valves and more. This important role will work in the field, interact with customers, and perform hands-on repair and maintenance tasks that will help keep our water flowing. Primary Role /This role is responsible for installing and repairing of service lines, water mains and hydrants./ Job Responsibilities Frequently repairs/replaces water lines/mains which include the following: Requires constant standing and walking on uneven and slippery surfaces. Uses pry bar to open lid to the valve. Kneels on the asphalt. Heavy grasping of pry bar. Wrist deviation and elbow flexion and extension, trunk and neck flexion. Uses ladders to climb down into holes. Uses key (30#) to open/close the valve. Holds onto handle at waist heights and turns valve. Heavy grasp, wrist deviation and elbow flexion/extension with shoulder flexion and internal/external rotation. Puts sleeves on the main and tightens by hand using a wrench. This task requires trunk and neck flexion, side bending, crouching and squatting, and kneeling. May lay on their stomach or sides on the ground. Uses backhoe to dig the hole however they may have to hand shovel on a frequent basis. Trunk and neck flexion, elbow flexion and extension, shoulder flexion and heavy grasping. 2 person lift/carry shoring from truck to hole. Can weigh 50 to 90#. Lowers shoring into the hole-trunk flexion, forward reaching. Carries pump to the hole (40#) and attaches pump to the shoring. Push/pulling motion to push open the shoring. Elbow flexion and extension, wrist deviation, trunk flexion. Carries dewatering pump to the hole (75-90#). Push/pulling motion to push open the shoring. Elbow flexion and extension, wrist deviation, trunk flexion. This task requires trunk and neck flexion, side bending, forward reaching, hand and air tool use, wrist deviations, elbow flexion and extension and shoulder motions in all planes. Some tools have pull start which requires heavy grasping and forceful shoulder flexion, protraction/retraction and elbow flexion/extension. May use hand or air tools-wrist deviation, elbow flexion and extension and heavy grasping. May need to use cheater bar. May reach overhead on an occasional basis to get tools while in an excavation. Consistently works in traffic area. Uses the following tools: backhoe, shoring, pump, dewatering pump (75-90#), tamper, wrenches, cheater bar, shovels, rakes, hand tools and air and hydraulic tools, ladder, cut-off saw (25#). Occasionally repairs/replaces water lines/mains which include the following: Uses jack hammer (60-90#) to break up asphalt for up to 30 minutes at a time. Holds at waist to chest height. Heavy grasping using both hands, maximal vibration and risk of kick back. Neck and slight trunk flexion, elbow flexion. Uses backhoe to pull line, but may have to manually climb into hole and push line when it gets stuck (variable force). Tools used are hand and air tools, ladder, pry bar, key (30#), jackhammer (60-90#) Frequently or occasionally operates backhoe which include the following: Drives equipment to work location. Steps up into backhoe. Bilateral upper extremity use operating hand controls. Forward reaching at waist height. Foot control operation. Gripping, neck rotation and neck flexion. Seat rotates. Vibration and jostling noted when operating machine. Tools used are backhoe. Key Accountabilities On an as needed basis repairs/replaces hydrants/valves which include the following: Uses backhoe to dig around the hydrant/valve. Hand digging as necessary. Uses hydraulic snappers (100#). Bilateral upper extremity task, wraps chain around the main. Uses a pumping motion to squeeze the main and break it. Trunk flexion, neck flexion, grasping, elbow flexion and extension. Lift/carry 100#. Uses backhoe to move the hydrant. Trunk flexion to move hydrant/valve to guide into place. Flush hydrants uses a wrench to open/shut the hydrant. Grasps the tool, wrist deviation and forearm rotation. May need to use a cheater pipe. Lubricates the treads, trunk flexion and forward reaching. Uses key (30#) to open/close the valve. Holds onto handle at waist height and turns valve. Heavy grasp, wrist deviation and elbow flexion/extension with shoulder flexion and internal/external rotation. Operates tapping equipment. Tools used are backhoe, hydraulic snappers (100#), wrench, cheater bar, cut-off saw (25#), tapping equipment. Frequently maintains hydrants/valves which include the following: Flush hydrants uses a wrench to open/shut the hydrant. Grasping of the tool, wrist deviation and forearm rotation. May need to use a cheater pipe. Lubricates the treads, trunk flexion and forward reaching. Uses key (30#) to open/close the valve. Holds onto handle at waist height and turns valve. Heavy grasp, wrist deviation and elbow flexion/extension with shoulder flexion and internal/external rotation. Uses pry bar to open lid to the valve. Kneels on the asphalt. Heavy grasping of pry bar, wrist deviation and elbow flexion and extension, trunk and neck flexion. Tools used are hand and air tools, pry bar, key (30#), utilize hand held and truck mounted valve turning equipment. Occasionally controls traffic which include the following: Places cones and signs in the appropriate place.
