Summary The Supervisory Firefighter serves at two medical center campuses of the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The Supervisory Firefighter performs the duties necessary to provide and furnish full fire protection to the VAMC with 2.3 million gross square feet of space. This includes 5 multistory patient buildings and approximately 74 other buildings including occupant quarters. Responsibilities Duties: Responds to Medical Center emergencies. Provides technical support upon request to facility service Chiefs and supervisors in aspects of fire protection and medical emergency activity at the VA Medical Center. Is a technical authority as the facility for fire protection and must provide leadership in the implementation of initiatives, while demonstrating decision-making capabilities that reflect understanding of complex regulation. Supervision of 8 or more personnel's day to day operations. Supervises and oversees fire and life safety inspections of patient and employee living quarters, office areas, medical and treatment areas, warehouses, maintenance shops, recreational facilities, food services, vacant storage buildings, areas undergoing renovation, etc., Makes recommendation for personnel action, appointments, promotions, reassignments, or the recognition of outstanding performance to the Fire Chief. Assures the accomplishment of the daily administrative functions required by the Medical Center. Completes an initial hazard or risk assessment. Assists pre-fire planning, draws evacuation route blueprint, familiarizes themselves with fixed fire protection systems and equipment, station building construction, location of hazardous materials, emergency shutoffs and selects emergency routes. Conducts interim life safety measure (ILSM) inspections as a crew searching for unsafe conditions that could possibly endanger the patients, staff, and visitors of the VAMC. Performs other necessary duties assigned by the Fire Chief. Physical Requirements: In an emergency, work requires the ability to perform strenuous physical activity for an extended period of time. The most common encountered applications of strength and endurance are lifting and carrying objects (up to 80 lbs.), pulling objects (up to 135 lbs.), and working with objects in front of the body (up to 125 lbs.). Activities involve prolonged periods of time standing, walking, bending, crouching and carrying heavy firefighting tools and related equipment associated with the performance of such duties as maintenance, testing, inspections, drills, suppression and transport of persons. Eyes: Corrected distant vision must be at least 20/30 in one eye and 20/70 in the other eye. Uncorrected distant vision is required only if it is likely that corrective lenses may be lost or broken. If so, uncorrected distant vision must be at least 20/100 binocular. Ability to distinguish basic colors is required. Applicants must be free from acute or chronic eye disease.
