Job Description
The employee in this position conducts guided tours of the Michigan State Capitol Building for individuals and groups, informing them of the building's architecture, history, construction, and artwork, and well as the legislative process, and state government functions. Individual staffs the Information Desks, answers the telephone, responds to inquiries from callers and visitors, assists with Capitol events, and schedules tours of the Capitol and Michigan Historical Museum. The employee will also work on historical research projects, assist with the care and interpretation of the capitol's collections, and help create educational materials and programming.
The Michigan Capitol Education and History Department schedules and conducts tours of the Michigan State Capitol Building for individuals and groups informing them of the building's architecture, history, artwork, construction, as well as the legislative process, and state government functions. This department fields incoming phone calls and emails responding to inquiries from visitors and assists with Capitol events. Additionally, staff works on research and interpretive projects to further the knowledge of the history of the building and help bring that knowledge to the public.
This position works 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday (40 hours per week). The Capitol is currently open the first Saturday of each month. Employee will be expected to work Saturdays on a rotational basis.

Required Education and Experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree required, with preference given to candidates with degrees in history, historic preservation, museum studies, or education.
Prior experience working in a museum or historic site in Michigan desired.
Excellent verbal communication skills required, including experience in public speaking or making group presentations.
Demonstrated writing skills required, with writing sample submitted with application.
Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position.
Equivalent combination of education and experience of above acceptable.
Must have excellent customer service skills and be able to interact effectively with Capitol visitors in person and on the phone.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be willing and able to work irregular hours and overtime as required, including nights and weekends.
Must be willing to work holidays and Saturdays on a rotational basis.
Must be able to stand for prolonged periods and climb stairs frequently.
Must be able to hear and be heard in a noisy environment.
Must be willing and able to work with children.
Must maintain a professional, friendly attitude, including forming and upholding a positive image of the Capitol and state government.
Must be willing and able to be certified in CPR and first aid.
Additional Requirements and Information
Capitol Educators are required to wear a uniform. Uniform pieces will be provided by the Michigan State Capitol Commission (MSCC).

Leave Time

Deferred Compensation
Employees may invest income in a tax-deferred retirement investment program. The state offers two optional deferred compensation plans, the 457 and 401(k). Employees decide the amount deducted from each paycheck.
Retirement
Employees receive a minimum 4% state contribution toward their defined contribution retirement fund. If an employee elects to contribute more, the state will match that percentage (up to 3%).
